This marks the 20th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. Back then, the United States and a lot of the West supported the taliban, just because they were anti communist. Since nothing was settled and war continues to ravage Afghanistan, in another 20 years there will be more mothers to shed tears like these people.

When my son was in the army - I prayed every day for his safety - and I'm not even a real believer. I just was desperate to hold onto any hope in a situation where I had no control. I think it's the worst thing in the world to outlive your children.
Thankfully, he came home safely, although scarred in other ways, I think. Any time I hear of a soldier killed, I think of his/her parents and grieve the loss of life as if it was my child that died.

It's often said but it's not correct. The Taliban movement appeared in 1994. That's 3 years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and 5 years after the withdrawal of the last Soviet troops from Afghanistan. So they didn't take any part in the Soviet war.
