Some paintings to liven up a few drab walls in the Beaches area of Toronto. From about 1870-1940, this was where wealthy Torontonians built their summer cottages, all were highly individual in design and remain so even to this day. It is only about 20 minutes by streetcar from downtown Toronto. Everyone loves this area, only a 5 minute walk from Lake Ontario, with small unique shops, cafes and absolutely no industry. Dogs and people spend hours here, and walking along the boardwalk close to the lake.

Excellent! Are those blocked off windows/doors or "never were" windows/doors?

Probably 'never were'. I have no idea, but because of the slight architectural detail at the top, I doubt they were originally doors or windows. Will ask the next time I am there.

This is a mural painted on what was one of the original firehouses in Uptown New Orleans, now,a private residence. The owners had this mural commissioned not long after they purchased the building. I feared it destroyed by floodwaters from Katrina, but, was pleasantly surprised to see it today while out cycling.

Blue flames shooting from the Virgin Mary seem to be one of her trademarks for appearances. I hope that she appears before me some day and that I have my camera ready!

You mentioned in the "commercial signage on old walls" thread about ingrained images. If you lived here, you'd barely have to glance at that picture to instantly recognize the Virgin of Guadalupe (<--#27), even though it's a stylized version. Those aren't flames, but her halo, or aura, if you will.

In what city is this wall IMEC? It would make me smile and feel happy every time I walked by it. Cheers! Mich

Haha! It's in Winnipeg Mich! Saw it at night earlier in the week and just HAD to come back on the weekend and shoot it. It's on the side of a building owned by a building maintenance service... Bee Clean! Hahahahahahahaha!

Did you see the endpapers of the Steinbeck book, over in the Maps thread? #78 is reminiscent of that era of illustration. Very wonderful & effective on that wall. 1st one in #79: Now we know where S. Clay Wilson is & what he's doing! Either that, or it's his tamer brother.

That's a lovely trompe l'oeil.
What building is that? Is that the same place where you took the wrought iron gate photo?

Good to see hippiedom again.
I went there early '70's just as the hippy ideal was dying a death. Shame..........

Wonderful to have found appealing photos of the Haight. The few times I went there over the past couple of decades, everything looked so depressing.
And I don't want to believe that it is true, even in 2012. "Counter culture" is not the solution for most people, but I would like to believe that it is a gentle refuge for certain people.

Or maybe they just want to be left alone to do drugs and listen to music.
