Love it or hate it, dubbing is extremely prevalent in the major languages of the world particularly for films and TV series.

I've always wondered about dubbing, as it seems so difficult to get right. And even when it's done really well, it's still a little distracting, as there's the temptation to keep watching the actors' mouths to see the dubbing at work. The detail about the kissing noises caught my attention, as I hadn't thought about everything needing to be put back into the new version. You also hear about movies needing parts to be dubbed over as the sound quality is not good enough as originally filmed.

The article sort of surprised me, as it described dubbing exactly as I'd imagined it. I guess I always thought the inside story would be simpler.

I know someone from here who insists that Homer Simpson's Mexican voice is much better than the original American one.

I have found a TV series that I need to watch dubbed into French because otherwise it drives me crazy. It is Kommissar Dupin (Commissaire Dupin), a German series based on French novels about a police commissioner in Brittany. The setting has been respected, and it takes place in Concarneau. The star is called Georges Dupin (and is played by an actor called Pasquale Aleardi so I guess that proves that Europe is here to stay for most of us). Anyway...

Ha ha, joke's on me. I cleverly clicked on cc so I could get captions and know what the actors were saying.

The captions were in Dutch.

Oh, you're right! Mine too. Should have looked more closely. I've been getting lots of my regular sites in Dutch, so just assumed without looking well that the captions were also.

I think it's more likely automatic YouTub-eutsch. Some oddities there.

When I speak English some people may think I'm being dubbed with a strong accent ;-)

You don't have a strong accent, Whatagain. Your English is excellent and what accent you have sounds pleasant & sophisticated.

I'm not a fan of dubbing in films and find subtitles much less intrusive. On tv recently I've noticed that there's a tendency to add subtitles to the screen when an interviewee has a strong accent, even if their English is good. It annoys me intensely as it seems disrespectful and very patronising.

I agree, Cheery. I want to hear the actors real voices.

Also agree about the second thing. Since we now usually have the option of turning on captions even for things in our own languages, it does seem unnecessarily insulting to automatically insert them for accents.

Some people have an 'ear' for understanding accents, others don't. When "Crocodile Dundee" movie was shown in USA it was dubbed into US accent as the Ozzie accented English was not understood. Other English-speaking countries had no troubles with it.

When travelling with people who are not 'first language English'I rarely had problems, but I made a point of speaking carefully and avoiding idioms or slang.

'Course I can bung on some true-blue Ozzie dialect, sorta like a kinda code, not move me lemon pips (lips)and the other mugs haven't a clue what's bein'said.

I don't think that is so, Questa. The movie was slightly edited both for the UK & the US to get a 15 Uk rating & a PG-13 one for the US. Other than that, the only real change was substituting "busybody" for "stickybeak" -- & that version was released in the UK & the US. www.imdb.com/title/tt0090555/alternateversions

The first Mad Max was also dubbed into American, even for release in Europe. I was outraged.
