This evening we went to one of the "old line" Lundi Gras parades. Some,(I think only three)still use the old traditional FLAMBEAUX to illuminate the floats. Here is one of them. Simply gorgeous, worth going to the parade just to see.The newer parades are illuminated artificially, and frankly, are just not the same .

Oh my gosh, Casimira!!! It has been ages -- thank you so much for this great picture. Yes, there is a magic with real fire that's missing no matter how ra-cha-cha any new-fangled illumination might be. How great that the guy looked right at you and smiled for the photo. You really captured this!
He looks awfully bundled up. Was it cold?

"Magical" is indeed the word. These guys also do great twirling around and dancing to the marching bands as they go. This guy was stopped in front of me (as the parade had stopped briefly). He saw me with the camera and did indeed pose.
COLD yes,3C and windy,but clear,clear skies.A beautiful night.

LOVE them. Don't know if I could pick a favorite, although the one with just the gloved hand showing is stellar.

Saint Rita is the patroness of impossible cases. Obviously it was not impossible for you to get great pictures at her altar. I am transfixed by the second one -- so beautiful.
(Coincidentally, considering the discussion going on in Port & Starboard, the burka thread, St. Rita was also an abused wife.)

Amazing photo, Bjd. That's not something I would have associated with Colombia. Hats off to Kerouac as the originator and king of this photo genre ~ Go here to see where these little fires flicker.

Fire is an elusive subject -- thank god for digital cameras that allow one to take 20 photos to manage to take a good one!

I think that a certain amount of skill is involved! I don't think that it's just down to opportunity and a good camera.

I kept thinking I would get a better pic, but, alas,my batteries died. It being a new camera,I hadn't been paying as close attention to how long the batteries lasted in it. So, I only got two pics. Fortunately, I did wait until the fire was roaring until I got the 2 shots that I did. On second examination, this other pic looks a bit better,or does it,I often have difficulty being objective about which pics to post.

Pictures of wood burning are always fascinating to me, no matter what. I am always mesmerized by the little spurts of gas or whatever, which make a new little flame or else deviate an existing flame into a new position.

There was a gothic-revival plantation house outside my home town that burnt to the ground in the 1960s. The lady who owned the house always said that watching the big rose window burn and melt was one of the most beautiful things she'd ever seen.

I am always mesmerized by the little spurts of gas or whatever, which make a new little flame or else deviate an existing flame into a new position. A campfire takes the place of the boob tube whilst sitting around in the dark on camping trips. It's hard to take your eyes off it. Yet it blinds you to whatever else there is to see around you.
