For the last 7 or 8 years, my daughter has been making calendars for everyone in the family using her own photographs on a particular theme. She designs them and then has them printed by the same kind of place that does online photo or book printing.

I understand how much that means bjd as my DIL does the same - my yearly calendar gives so much pleasure .

And yet I received one of those a few years ago and just thought "what a waste of time and money." But I am a terrible person. (But also the person who made it was a nephew whom I have never even met so I have no attachment to what he does.)

I can't remember how far back it has been that my husband and I have shared an exchange about something we take pleasure in. We are both huge fans of Bob Dylan and as with most of his music which people either love or hate there are certain lyrics that we have made reference to over the years.
I have half-jokingly mentioned how my life would not be complete without a "Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat". The lyrics to this Dylan song are comical and nonsensical in nature which is one of the reasons we like it so much.
Yesterday I received 2 parcels in the mail. Both were unexpected and took me by surprise. One was some seeded rye bread from NY that is precious in that one can't get decent rye bread in NOLA. The other was a parcel that contained a vintage hatbox with a (imitation or faux) leopard skin pill box (!!!!!!!) hat that T. found on a website that offers all manner of items, new and old, handmade and unique. It appears to not ever been worn, the newspaper stuffing in the hatbox is from the Sioux City Journal, April 1967. It's a real treasure to be sure. I have to play around a bit with how to wear it (hair down) and need to find a (preferably vintage) hatpin to use for it.

French income tax declarations were already easy in recent years, but this year they are easier than ever. In the past, the tax site filled in all of the information from the employer, pension office, banks etc. and just asked you to take a look and validate or correct it. This year the site says the figures will be validated automatically if you say nothing. Not even one click is necessary. On top of that, I am getting a (small) refund again for some of the withholding tax.
When I think of how I used to sweat over the form for hours in bygone years and have to look up at least a dozen documents, many of which needed to be attached to the declaration when it was mailed to the tax office, I really don't understand how people can complain about bureaucracy in this department.

A tattoo parlour has just opened almost next door to my place. Excellent news since my neighbourhood was lacking such an establishment and this will surely enhance the prestige of the area. While I do not expect to require their services myself, I will happily direct any visiting Anyporters there and you might even be able to persuade me to help you choose your design.

That should do.

I kind of thought you'd want one of these emblazoned on your chest -- it's more discreet.

I got in the taxi just as the rain began to fall. Now the city is completely underwater and it is still pouring. But I am high and dry.

I am enjoying the last moments of a family reunion with cousins I hadn’t seen since my parents died.
My Dad’s sister had 11 children who are my first cousins. They live in Michigan and we saw them once or twice a year growing up, and then infrequently in the years since, but we have loving relationships with them over distance.
These 11 (now 10) siblings have a reunion for their nuclear family and their offspring every summer the last weekend in July. This year, as we all get older and a few are wrestling with declining health, they decided to extend invitations far and wide, including to me and my sister (who couldn’t come as she’s traveling in Ireland this week), so I flew here by myself.
About 70 people, from infant to 78 years old, mostly descended from my Grandmother, gathered on a park-like piece of land on the shore of Gull Lake in Michigan for a day of reminiscing, reacquainting, eating, swimming, boating and general good times. It was heartwarming to be hugged by so many people I’ve known all my life, and to meet their children who brought their own children and even one 3-month old great grandchild of my favorite cousins.
Though my own nuclear family is down to just 3 of us, having the embrace of this larger family is so heartwarming.
Tomorrow I will visit my great grandparents’ farm, now an Audubon bird sanctuary, and also the township cemetery where my grandparents and great grandparents and so many aunts and uncles are buried, before winging back to Montana.

Sounds like a rare social moment of contentment. Usually with a group that large there is at least one big fight.

No fights, but lots of hugs. My cousins are half-Italian and they’re great huggers! The men are quite handsome, too. BTW, their parents were aerial artists in the circus when they met! Yes, my aunt ran away and joined the circus!

So today Mr. Kimby and I were shopping for a few items after getting our flu shots and COVID 19 booster shots at the pharmacy attached to the supermarket. As the cashier handed me the receipt she suddenly blurted “You’re so pretty!” I was stunned, because it’s been decades since anyone but Mr. Kimby has said anything like that to me, and I’ve been feeling pretty invisible as I inch toward 70 later this fall. I’m still walking on air.

Yea we should. I remember being at the green linnet in Paris and looking at a young woman and telling her she is beautiful and has a great smile. But I refrain from doing so as men saying such things can be considered as harassing or …

I am always pleased when I find pricing mistakes in supermarkets. As a skinflint and a big fan of the bins full of reduced perishables due to the date, I always dive in to see what is available. But it wasn't until I opened the package today that I saw that the reduction was completely wrong and the price should have been 1.67€. Even a refund of a few eurocents pleases me, even more so because I know that mistakes are not rare but that people noticing the mistakes seems to be extremely rare.
