No, we have no concierge and in case of a leak, the fire department comes and breaks in. It has only happened once.

We are cleaning out my MiL's condo in Wisconsin (yes, they had too many houses full of stuff) and we came across a little box that contained among other things the wedding ring she had been missing for about 5 years. Though I'm sad that we can't tell her it's been found, I am touched that Mr. Kimby gave it to me to wear. Especially since my own ring sits in a drawer because it needs retipping so the stone doesn't fall out, which I've postponed since my knuckle grew too large to get it on and off anymore. MIL's ring fits perfectly.

Oh, that is bittersweet but quite lovely, Kimby. You seem to have married into an all-round wonderful family.

I am learning a lot about my dear-departed in-laws as we sift through the stuff of 70 years of marriage. Though I never knew them to be overtly religious (other than attending mass every Sunday till they got too old), I found FIVE black lace mantillas among my MILs stuff, and probably 15 or more rosaries. Plus prayer cards from every funeral they ever went to (and probably prayer cards from funerals her parents went to, too. She probably inherited THEIR collection years ago.)
We will be attending a smallish family gathering in her memory on Sunday, and will bring some of the portraits of her, from age 4 to 90+. Including her wedding portrait in a glorious custom-made satin gown with a skirt that is cut so it trails behind like a train, but was arranged in a circle around her in her seated portrait. Mr. Kimby found a dusty box in the storage locker and, guess what it contained? That 71 year old gown, in perfect condition, complete with veil. It's gorgeous and I hope we can find a family member on Sunday whose daughter might like might to wear it. Cannot bear to take it to a thrift store, but decades-old wedding gowns are a dime a dozen, and even the local theatre company has too many bride dresses. (Fur coats, too.)

Oh!!! Please take a pic of Cheery at the glorious gathering with her new "elephant ears'!!!!
Most uncanny experiences this past week.I found on two separate occasions, early in the a.m.while going out to meet my friend for coffee and hanging out on the bench with our dogs, I found two wallets. One was smack dab in front of our house in a parking space which is almost always occupied by someone who must work on Oak Street, the commercial street closest to us. There lay a wallet, chock full of credit cards, a wee bit of cash, an Arkansas driver's license and numerous other cards. Hmmm... how to track down this person I did find a card that was an employee card for a local grocery. I called the market and indeed the gentleman told me that they did have a woman by her name working there. I gave him my name and phone number and within fifteen minutes received a call from her. She indeed knew that she had lost her wallet and was frantic. So, we made arrangements for her to come and retrieve it. She offered a reward and I demurred, letting her know that that was totally unnecessary. The next day, in my mail box was a gift certificate to the market where she worked, a high end market I rarely shop because they are more than a tad out of my budget.
Two days later around the same time of morning I find another wallet. Again, chock full of cards, a lot of cash yet in this case, an easy way to track her down as her driver's license was local and nearby. She came and retrieved it, also offered me some kind of compensation which I declined. Later that day, in my mailbox, another gift certificate to a fancy wine bar and restaurant in my neighborhood.
In both cases these women had been out the night before and parked on our street and upon leaving dropped their wallets and did not discover them gone until the next morning.
Generally, one runs cross empty purses and wallets that have been snatched and then emptied out and tossed by the thief.
Had it been a couple of hours later of my finding them, the likelihood of them being returned intact would have been slim to none.
Karma wheel a turning...

I remember once finding a wallet that belonged to a local teenager. I think there was about $100 in it (a lot for a teenager 20 years ago) the teen's bus pass and i.d. Teen didn't even thank me. I didn't expect any reward, but thanks would have been nice...

I went back to the Balham library today, where they'd given me a temporary membership when I first got here. At the time I was told that in order to extend it I would need all kinds of proofs of residence -- utility bills in my name, stuff like that -- which of course I wouldn't be able to provide. However, when I checked out my books today the guy on the desk told me that the card would expire soon and was my local address still qrs and my contact information xyz. I confirmed that it was & and he informed me that he'd renewed me for another year. Having a library card gives me such a feeling of security!

Today I called my second cousin Simone who had left me a message about a week ago to tell me that she had moved out of her daughter's house ("I couldn't handle the stairs anymore.") and she is now in a retirement home. I noted down the number on my desk, but it was wrapped under plastic by the painters for the following week, so I didn't get my desk back until yesterday. She is still adjusting to this new (end of) life, the food is bad and a lot of the people are not all there (I know plenty about that problem.). But we had a nice talk for about 30 minutes, and she is still as sharp as a tack, so it is a real pleasure to discuss things with her. I promised that I would come and visit one of these days, just as I visited my great uncle René twice, who had been farmed out to a nursing home in Belgium (Messancy) at the end. (Belgium has superior and cheaper nursing homes than France.) I know that visiting these people is one of the most important things in their lives, since almost nobody ever does it since all of these places are smelly and depressing. But it is part of my family protocol.

I was taking the habit of going to see my aunt's wife when she died. She liked it her family liked and it was ok for me. My wife was surprised... positively.

Her work is so beautiful! That is lovely and from the loveliest person ever.
My little thing is that I just went outside in the late dusk (8pm) and saw that there are now big hawk moths(?) in my patio for the first time. They were attracted here by the moon flowers.

Another good little thing ~ this is the last day of July, thank goodness. July is the month of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Mexico. I live quite close to one of the two churches del Carmen in Oaxaca & am on its procession route. Just now I was wearing headphones and watching a show. I had to stop because of someone repeatedly ringing a bell in front of the house. (the old ding-dong school kind). Now a not terribly talented woman is singing with a microphone and as soon as she stops it will be time for more big bang fireworks and a slow procession up the street. Poor Oliver can't stop trembling and Harley and Darla are none too happy either.
Oh, she finally shut up and the brass band has struck up a dirge.

I've just realised the word and website LinkedIn, due to the font normally used, is "Linked In" rather than a somewhat unpronounceable Linkedln. Took me years to see this.

I just finished completely renovating my Sto. Domingo Church thread, which was in tatters due to photobucket's dirty trick, format changes, etc. I also now have a handle now on how to recover and replace our images which we'd thought lost to the dire gray squares. (and yes, of course I'll be sharing that information)
