I got my father's day present... Daughter said she could not wait until official day, Sunday. That alone was a present.

Should you get that cancer at 75, you will die With it, not From it. Whatagain - My husband turns 76 on 23rd June and has not gone for any examination of his prostate. So he is safe then? Marvellous Whatagain - those girls do love you!!

One thing that I have read about prostate cancer is that if it is treated or left untreated, life expectancy remains the same. So I guess it is just a matter of comfort, but I don't even know if prostate cancer hurts. I imagine that it is usually detected due to urinary or erectile dysfunctions.

Tomorrow I will see the ocean for the first time in at least two years. Maybe even more.

Today I got a new mouse, which naturally came in a blister pack. Just as I was going off to get the hacksaw, dynamite, etc. to open it, I noticed a slightly raised notch on the upper back corner. I hooked my finger into the notch and pulled down & the whole back opened, just like that! Then it was a matter of easily pulling out the stiff paper backing & removing the mouse from the contoured front part of the packaging. So easy, so simple, so past due as an idea! web photo of the model I bought in its ingenious packaging ~

Bixa, there’s a whole episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm devoted to those dastardly plastic tombs they sell things in. Pretty funny, and very apropos.

I wish they'd outlaw plastic packaging and just put them in a compostable, flimsy, thin cardboard box. Why must all packaging be in evil forever plastic? Ban it all!

It's an effort to reduce losses by making it harder to slip things out of their packaging and into a pocket. Many plastic packages contain a electronic tag that will ring alarms when exiting the store unless deactivated at the checkout counter.
Still sucks.

Well, at least McDonald's in France has discontinued all items made out of plastic in their Happy Meals. I don't know about other countries.

Not only that they are in hard plastic but, each container has a what my husband calls a "hippie proof" way of opening. "pinch here", "press down on this side". Maddening!!

Almost as hard to open as all of those items marked "easy open."

Fabulous, wonderful, excellent news, Whatagain ~ the best!
Have you had one eye covered up until today? You posted about getting the operation, but what was the process, if you don't mind my asking.
At any rate ~ congratulations!

Hi bixa. Normally you get the eye covered until next morning, but my wife removed most of the cover and i had a transparent plastic cap that is scotched over the eye. So i could see a bit through it. This she removes for the day and puts back for the night - protection against rubbing my eye.
My wife was quote pleased, as i used a lot of superlatives - but really it is such a wonderful feeling to see clearly, mow agter nearly 4 months... and i see better than last year, since the lens she inserted corrects my eye !
Just fantastic.

Thanks, Whatagain. This really is somewhat of a miracle, that eyes can now be fixed in this way.
It is also quite wonderful that you had your very own skilled life mate for your doctor!

Great news Whatagain!
Two friends of ours that are architects have offered up their services in designing a new house for us to build on our property at no charge. (We have finally come to a decision to demolish the burnt house and rebuild our own house). It will be a long process but after searching and going over and over as to what we are going to do it is a huge relief that we are both on the same page about this. The added support of our neighbors and friends wanting us to rebuild and stay has been so gratifying in making this major decision. All the places we have been interested all need too much work to be done and it's just too stressful every time we find a place only to discover all the hidden flaws that could potentially be disastrous one way or another. Especially houses that are very old and have not been updated. Be it roof, electrical, sewage/drainage etc.

I'm sure the house will be both fireproof and hurricane proof, maybe even flood proof!

The house was not insured Mick. I was in the process of finding another carrier because Allstate was jacking up the policy $4.000USD more than we had previously been paying. (some bone headed hail and wind damage extra fee) The money from our NY property will be enough to fulfill what we want to do. And, as our lot is that valuable, it would be foolish to sell it and buy another property that would be a money pit. Everyone we have spoken with all agree and at this point it's really a "no brainer".

I imagine it’s comforting to have reached a decision about the next step. Hopefully, planning the new house and including all the things on your wish list, will be fun and enjoyable. It will be a new adventure, but on an old, beloved property.

Indeed Kerouac. The possibilities are endless and we plan to go "all out" to build not only an aesthetically pleasing house but, most of all practical and safe. (as safe as a house in NOLA can be ).
HTMB, comforting a major plus along with it being a new adventure.

Of course, there is also the problem of construction sites. Probably a lot of your garden is going to be destroyed by both the demolition and the construction. But this will be an opportunity to plan the new garden perfectly, and I'm sure that you will be able to save some of the more important plants.
