My husband went and got 6 sturdy boxes with handles that she arranged to have set aside for me.

That lovely exchange with the lady at the drugstore pretty much ices the cake of your deciding to stay put in your neighborhood. ❤️

Yes indeed. To add to this, a neighbor in the new place we are renting just came by with a half of a baby watermelon all wrapped up and ready to put in the refrigerator. How incredibly thoughtful as I barely know this woman other than to exchange hellos etc.

my baby has returned home after two weeks with her dad (though actually, she is not that little anymore, so not sure that counts for the "little things" thread ...)

No matter her age, she’ll always be your baby.

No matter her age, she’ll always be your baby. I agree. And starting to understand 😉

This morning I was able to get out and do something for a friend and spend sometime with her. She is someone that I have mentored over the last 5 or 6 years now and is an incredibly hard working woman. She asked me for some assistance in bidding on some large garden projects on her horizon. We had a fun time as it took me out of the neighborhood into another section of the city where I haven't been in a long time. She was born and raised here and pointed out places, schools, churches, music clubs from days gone by. It was just what I needed to get out of my head of late.

Making time for fun little distractions can be so beneficial. It sounds like your visit with this particular friend was exactly what you needed, Casimira. I’m certainly not in the same category as far as recent loss of home, but I’ve had some family things to deal with lately. Tonight I met up with a friend and spent almost two hours just chatting and catching up. It was great and I feel much more relaxed now.

Exactly describes what I feel as well, Casi. I am sick to the back teeth with 99% of the newscasts of COVID-19, of it being the only thing filling people's conversation and the politicians hurling the blame on each other for the complete foul-up they have created.
Meanwhile we now have two Chinese spy ships shadowing the Oz and US joint war rehearsals off our northern coast, the Oz Olympic team is in Tokyo looking young and beautiful and a working dog,( i.e a kelpie x collie born with instincts for herding sheep etc) sold for $38,000 recently.
It is mid winter, cold, grey, foggy, wet...and our cricket team is not worth the airfares.

Thanks HTMB and Questa. I hope both of your situations get better. The urge to isolate has been my overall instinct. Add to that the daily torrential thunderstorms, it's easy to just not want to go out much. I'm very fond of this young woman and miss spending time with her as she would help me with my own garden. She is also very funny and loves my animals. She was initially going to send me photos of the job site but I told her it would be difficult to get an accurate read on the overall job without really eyeballing it. She got real excited when I told her this and said "oh! I was hoping you would say that". So, we ended up both doing each other a favor. (I have helped her bid on jobs several times mainly because when I first started my garden business I screwed myself a bunch of times by underbidding many a job).

While over at the old house this morning one of our neighbors came by and told me how her prayers had been answered (she is severely religious, which is not a criticism of her, it's just a fact) in that we are rebuilding. I told her she may not be so grateful once the demo commences with all the noise and overall chaos.

I'm sure she's been through that before. She's just relieved to have good neighbours.

While visiting our local used bookstore yesterday I happed upon a copy of one of my most prized books that I lost. A first edition of The New Orleans Garden signed by the author who I came to know after having published this valuable tome. The owner of the book store gave it to me for free. I suppose she knows just how many books I lost (many of them acquired from her store) and seeing the look on my face when I saw the book didn't have the heart to charge me for it.

This is indeed wonderful, casimira, and reaffirming of the goodness of (some) humans.
I hope it’s the beginning of a new special library for your new special house. I mean home. ❤️

After the storm was over we went by the old house to check things out. I went into the shed that sits in the far back of the garden and is jam packed with items from the house along with many of my gardening tools. I eye balled one of my hummingbird feeders and snatched it up. I cleaned it really well and made some homemade nectar. As I was in the midst of hanging it up a hummingbird appeared, (I heard him before I saw him, he was that close to me.) Because this time of year is migratory season for them, it has had a lot of activity and it brings me much joy. Sometimes it really is the little things...

That's a great story about the hummingbird feeder. Hummingbirds are so cool, I was a little crushed when I learned they only live in the New World. Our hummingbirds here in the NW are resident and don't migrate. They get through the winter mostly eating spiders and bugs. I used to take a late winter couple of weeks in Scottsdale at my mother's house every year and the were a dizzying variety everywhere in the desert for a good wildflower bloom. They seem to really like the cactus flowers.

I had an extensive eye exam today and was expecting some really horrible news regarding my vision. However, it seems there’s been no recent major change and I’m not going to be facing surgery anytime soon. I’m very happy, but still a bit stunned. My lens corrections need to be tweaked a bit for better vision. Otherwise, my cataracts are the slow growing kind and the markers for a progressive disease haven’t changed since my last evaluation. I now need to find some way to celebrate because this is great news!

Thanks, Casimira. Good luck to you, too!
That’s a good suggestion, but since I detest wearing glasses, and only keep them around for emergencies, that’s not much of a reward for me. I put my contact lenses in first thing in the morning, and forget about them until early evening. My youngest and I are going to get pedicures instead.

At the hair i went yesterday i left about 500 g of my hair. I had long hair by my standards and had the shortest haircut i have had in decades. I feel every drop of the shower i take landing on my skull and i can dry my hair very quickly. I like it.

the swimming place we like was supposed to close two years for repairs, but now they don't have money for those repairs. bad for them - but for us really good that they are open again, everywhere else is either too far away, or not really that nice for children ...
