I have a friend who doesn't drive who wants me to take him to Ikea soon. That's always a dangerous trip. You go for candles and you come back with a palm tree. I always come back with meatballs. Seriously.

In French supermarkets, the ends of each aisle are called "têtes de gondole" (gondola prows). As you know, this is the prime location to trick people into impulse buying with the special offers, 2-for-the-price-of-one or Value-Pack or new-and-improved. Suppliers have to give kickbacks to the stores to have their products placed there, just like all of the gum and candy at the checkout area. To think that there are marketing specialists thinking of new ways to make us buy things on impulse every day!

Despite my most stringent efforts to not spend, yesterday, while out with a friend,(we both have the same weakness,) we were jet propelled into a bookstore and then, a record store. I did manage to put 2 Cd's back on the shelf when I got within about 20 feet of the cash register... I did not possess the same restraint in the book store...

I bought some new trainers but I really need them. I've been wearing the old pair for 3 years and there's a hole in them. Here are my new gold trainers: www.johnlewis.com/64523/Style.aspx

I was so proud of myself for not purchasing anything at the plant nursery last week. I made up for it however, over the weekend when The Herb Society had there bi-annual plant sale. I went a little overboard I'm afraid, but, don't regret it one bit. I was able to justify it in my head by saying, these are useful plants, not just meant to sit and look pretty. Also, some unusual specimens that one doesn't see offered very often.

My most recent impulse purchase: a hand made necklace of semi precious stones/beads with a sea turtle for a central charm. A friend made it and sold it to me for $25 (which I was told by another jewelry making friend was less than the price of the turtle alone).
I bought it with my Florida-dwelling MIL in mind, but may have trouble giving it up, as it's lovely.

kimby, that is a good deal. Sometimes impulses are good.
I haven't seen your necklace, but sometimes adding some little silver beads could kick it up a notch further. I don't really make jewellery, but I do haunt a neighbourhood shop that sells semi-precious beads and silver findings because I'm allergic to anything but silver or gold - at first in my pierced earlobes, but now even in terms of necklaces, bracelets etc.
I like some of the fun craft jewellery one finds in markets, but always have to change the hooks on earrings.
Does your friend have an artesanal jewellery business? I know someone who LOVES turtles, but classy pieces like that one.
And spindrift, you definitely needed new trainers. Those copper ones are darling.

Spindrift, it's not an "impulse" buy if it's something you need. That's just taking advantage of the right opportunity.
On the other hand, I just bought another pair of shoes.

Lagatta - I'm happy you like my copper shoes Talking about IKEA - I'm meeting a friend at the IKEA restaurant today. We'll have an amazingly cheap lunch and afterwards I'll stock up with their bags of ground coffee. It's cheap and good. Let's see if I can resist any Impulse Buys! LATER: I bought two beautiful umbrellas at IKEA..one is bright pink and the other is bright green. ;D They cost £1.99 each! Also ~ 3 prs of blue rubber gloves for washing-up. 59pence each. That's good value.

On impulse I bought two expensive T-shirts in Ireland (made in Italy). I forced myself to return one of them.
