In July 1991 I saw perhaps the most stunning event that I have ever seen in Paris, "La Grande Moisson" (The Great Harvest). In the space of one night, the entire Champs Elysées was turned into a wheat field all the way from the Arc de Triomphe to Place de la Concorde. How was this done? The wheat was grown to maturity in thousands of flat wooden crates, and they were all assembled like a giant jigsaw puzzle during the night. The next day, there was a parade of traditionally dressed farmers from every region, cows and a big distribution of fruits and vegetables. At the end of the afternoon, the wheat was harvested by huge combines that had been brought into the city. It was truly beyond spectacular to see all of that happening in such a place. Well, this year they're doing a new version of it, and this time it will last 3 days over Pentecost weekend, 22-23-24 May. 8000 crates of various plants will be installed to celebrate World Biodiversity Day on May 22nd. There will be peas, strawberries, sunflowers, pineapples, mustard, poplar trees, grape vines, cherry trees -- some of just about everything. On top of that, it's all for sale on the website www.naturecapitale.com -- each box is 1m x 1m20, weighs 300kg and is priced at 700€ which includes delivery to one's home after the event. The following edition of this event is scheduled for Times Square, NYC in spring 2011.
