Yes, there are certainly a lot of Chinese - and Vietnamese - restaurants thereabouts. That is how I first came to know Place de Torcy. I have another friend who lived on Marx-Dormoy, but farther down, near La Chapelle. We went to the Torcy restaurants with friends who lived at completely the other end of the 18th, rue Étienne-Jodelle near La Fourche. We walked all the way, crossing behind Montmartre along rue Caulaincourt and then past la Mairie (if I recall, sometimes we get our psychogeography oddly sorted and this was years ago, and along the long street (Ordener?) behind the railway tracks. Nice promenade.

I ate at New Thai San with my mother on Saturday. It enthusiastically applied the reduced VAT rate when the law changed, even though they did not reprint the menus -- they just deduct 10% from the bill at the end (except alcohol).

Was it any good? Vietnamese Thai, Chinese Thai, or actual Thai Thai?

No, it is Parisian Asian mish-mash. La Locomotive and Tin-Tin also on rue de Torcy are better. The fake Japanese Shin-Juku isn't bad either. I confess that I have not tried all of the other restaurants on rue de Torcy except for Hanuman, which does not appeal to me (but the food is good there, too -- it is just a giant dim sum Chinese wedding place).

I'm fairly sure I've been to Tin-Tin. This was a good 15 years ago, so perhaps my memory is off - but there were several Chinese and Vietnamese restos there back then. What there wasn't back then was much of a South Asian presence - you had to walk farther down, I believe towards La Chapelle.

I actually attended the official inauguration of the whole complex last month. Here is the mayor of Paris greeting Claude Sarraute, daughter of the writer who gave her name to the esplanade. They were inaugurating the new library in another part of the building at the same time

I see they are still using "écrivain". In Québec (and throughout French-speaking Canada)it is "écrivaine", also in Switzerland and Belgium.
Bully for your fat mayor! Much nicer fat mayor than Rob Ford! That complex looks like a very good transformation; and it is also great to have a new library nearby. I do too; the grand opening of a state-of-the-art local branch took place this past weekend. Unfortunately, I had a rush job and couldn't attend. I was at the launch earlier in the autumn, to look at the building and the complex from it (no hostel; eco-friendly housing, market rate (but reasonable) and social housing: a co-operative and a sort of HLM for pensioners, surrounding a parc, as well as a CPE (centre de la petite enfance- a daycare and early-childhood education centre.
What do you think of Anne Hidalgo?

Anne Hidalgo should make a good mayor. She is not as charismatic as Bertrand Delanoë, but she is a generation younger and obviously sees the world differently from an aging gay man whose main desire in life is to return to his native Tunisia. As a naturalized French citizen (born in Spain), she has a love and appreciation of France that most native French people do not have.
If ever Anne Hidalgo does not win the election, we will still have a woman mayor next year -- Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet. Oddly enough, I met her grandfather when I was in university, being chosen among a handful of students to attend a reception in honour of the French ambassador to the United States, Jacques Kosciusko-Morizet.

I noticed the little police detail in one of your photos and was thinking, alas it isn't just a formality, considering the woeful fact that Mayor Delanoë was victim of a homophobic knife attack by a deranged man some years back. One of Moustaki's last songs (with Vincent Delerme), "La fille à bicyclette" was dedicated to Delanoë for his work in promoting cycling (as well as walkability and public transport). grooveshark.com/#!/search/song?q=Georges+Moustaki+Une+Fille+A+Bicyclette+Feat.+Vincent+Delerm Merci, Monsieur Bertrand! In that latest photo of yours, he looks older than 63. Tired? Edited to add: Here are the lyrics to that song: Une fille à bicyclette Qu’y-a-t-il de plus joli Qu’une fille à bicyclette Dans une jupe mini Qui nous montre ses gambettes Qu’y-a-t-il de plus joli Qu’une fille à bicyclette A Lyon ou à Paris Sur le quai de la Joliette Elle craint rien ni personne Imprudente elle se faufile Entre les automobiles Qui râlent à coups de Klaxon Qu’y-a-t-il de plus joli Qu’une fille à bicyclette Dans les rues de l’île Saint-Louis Et dans toute la planète Qu’y-a-t-il de plus charmant Qu’une fille à bicyclette Qui s’en va vers son amant En tricotant des gambettes Le vent caresse son visage Il ébouriffe ses cheveux Le vent fait des envieux En effleurant son corsage Elle file droit devant Sans ménager sa peine Elle pédale à perdre haleine Et murmure en souriant “Merci monsieur Bertrand"

One thing I love about Paris is her practice of naming things -- streets, complexes -- after nearly contemporary people.

Yes, Sarraute and Havel certainly didn't die long ago. My favourite remains the Rosa Parks tram station and transport hub, in an area where there are commuters of every race and colour. Imagine there already is some Mandela stuff... I'm submitting a short article about Transvaalbuurt in Amsterdam, from the Boer war to anti-apartheid, in the relevant category.

Well it's that time again when I spend hours looking at hotels in Paris....so enjoyable! I think I have decided on two (besides the Ibis Esplanade la Defense) but nearly fell off my chair when I stumbled on this hotel! Who the heck thought of that name?! Au Royal Mad Hotel - 68 Rue Sedaine - Paris

Tod -- have a look at Google street view for that hotel. The area is okay in terms of being close to interesting areas, but rue Sedaine has nothing but Chinese wholesale clothing manufacturers. They have taken over the entire neighbourhood, so it's dead on weekends and evenings and the shop windows are of no interest during the day. Much of Blvd Voltaire has suffered the same fate.

Thanks bjd, I did just that for fun! I think we want to be right on top of Republic in something cheap but decent. Then I want to move to the outer perimeters of Paris into something even more decent for the same money! It looks as if I will be in Paris on my own for two weeks as my husband wants to head back to take care of business. That's great for me as I have done this before and love to wander around as I please. I might meet up with friends if they decide to come over, but as for a GTG with Fodorites I doubt it as I have been off that website for a few years now.

Yes, you're right - may come as a shock! I noticed the Fodorites are all too keen to bump into each other for a drink, coffee, or a whole restaurant night etc., and I have been there - done that. I keep contact with one lady namely Travelgina from time to time but never managed to meet up again. I don't think I have the enthusiasm that I had a few years ago, but if you, Mossie and Co., want to give it a try count me in! Maybe you have seen the TV series called "Dating in the Dark"? The couples love each other's personalities, bodies(by feely-feely) and get a HUGE idea in their heads what the other person should look like. I guess it's a bit like that here on AnyPort except we are only folks who love to chat about a variety of subjects....not get joined at the hip forever more Oh, and of course we are not all young and sensuous with a ton and a half of make-up but instead grandmothers and grandfathers and more "mature" so who gives a fig if we show signs of experience on our faces, or the shape of a good cook! Ha, Ha, Ha!

Well, not all of us. At least one member is a teenager. I could be a grandmother, biologically, but have never had children (or wanted to), so no.
I'd never go on a "dating show", not as a young person, nor as a late-middle-aged one.

Anyport does not have GTGs. It has a few quality meetings between select members from time to time.

private messages are possible on this site. What more do you need, anyporters?
Tod, true about your time alone in Paris. It is important for old couples to treasure their time together, but also enjoy their time apart.
Right above Republic would have been a mess of pollution before; must be much nicer now. I'm sure it is still noisy, but there is a difference between heavy traffic noise and the sounds of family outings. Do tell us if you find something reasonable and pleasant.

Louis, are you familiar with that place? In the info, it says that the duplex and studios also include a kitchen. Is that a shared kitchen, or a "coin cuisine" in each unit?
Also, would anyone know if they are providing a reasonable amount of electricity (for someone with a small laptop)? I don't imagine that they have WiFi, as it would be mentioned. I have no idea what "possibilités Internet" means; access for a fee, or having to have a France telecom account?

It looks like it might be a good deal.... or maybe not if the rooms are really minuscule. Since it says that a 'France Telecom' subscription has to be contracted by the renter, I'm sure this goes for internet access as well. In any case, the website should be updated since the name 'France Telecom' doesn't exist anymore.

I have no experience with this place. I just found it a number of years ago on Lonely Planet and saved the link for those that might be looking of low price accommodation. I am sure the space is small, but for some it could be just what they are looing for. I would like to hear from someone who has been there.
