thanks to casimira and nycgirl.. For me, Nepal is the most special place on earth I shall write more about the Nepali horse boy. I am no longer actively involved in his life, or his parents' life, but my friend has recently returned from Pokhara and Kathmandu and I know that she went to see him and perhaps try to sort things out for him. I will phone her and tell you what she says.

I have not made it to Nepal yet, but I certainly will when I am free to travel again.

I was just talking to my brother this weekend about Pokhara which he loves and was visiting this year. He said it was beautiful and friendly and easy to visit insofar as English is almost universally understood and spoken.
One thing he found odd was that his girlfriend who is Thai is taken as Nepalese on sight there and that many of the locals were clearly distinctly uncomfortable with the idea of a Western male foreigner being involved with a native which is widely considered taboo whereas the local males are absolutely unabashed about propositioning Western women and that he even met women tourists who considered a romance with a local an expected part of their travel adventure. No taboo whatever there. He said once the locals realized that his girlfriend wasn't local though the tension quickly dissipated. I always find such sexist attitudes, which are common in many traditional cultures, oddly quaint.

^ I, also, find Nepal to be quaint and, indeed, a highly moral place. No Western mores for the vast majority of the people. Maybe that's part of the reason why I love the country so much. I have only ever met with friendliness and respect wherever I have travelled . I have also noticed that when one of their own people finds good fortune there seems to be no jealousy and resentment. They seem singularly pleased this person has bettered himself in life.

the local males are absolutely unabashed about propositioning Western women Could it be less about morals and more about wanting to preserve the culture? I have also noticed that when one of their own people finds good fortune there seems to be no jealousy and resentment. They seem singularly pleased this person has bettered himself in life. That's refreshing! Versions of the story of the crabs pulling the escaping crab back into the bucket exist in far too many cultures. Doesn't she make great reports, Foreverman?! Not to embarrass you, Spindrift, but your great pictures and commentary are always enhanced by your deft hand at presentation.
