is approaching. I will be in Montreal for the month of July this year, with my 2 boys. I'd like to see Canada Day in Montreal, just for a change. Any idea where abouts is the best place to be for the major parade/events on that day?
Thanks in advance.

What exactly happens on Canada Day. (I am sorry to say this, but just the name is comical to a lot of us. )

Parades, free concerts, picnics, fireworks etc.
It used to be called "Dominion Day"

Kerouac, it's much like you Americans celebrate Independence day (4th July). And what imec said. Except we do it in a much more dignified way.

I think that's that idea that makes it comical -- "dignified."
By the way, I don't celebrate the 4th of July. In my country, I celebrate the 14th of July.
(Deyana, what you said is the same as if I explained to you why you should be celebrating 'India Day'.)

You have a point there, K. I'm too far removed from India for that. It sounds like it's the same for you.

Actually, I didn't find the name "Canada Day" funny. What I do find "funny" is feeling superior & more "dignified" because one is Canadian and not American.
Oh please.

Don't know about dignified, but we're certainly more subdued - neither a good nor bad thing, just a widely recognized fact. Or as Billy Bob Thornton put it in a now infamous "interview" he did on a popular national radio show here, Canadians are "mashed potatoes without the gravy" idiot.

Bixa, I was pulling Kerouacs leg, so to speak. He knows that. He teases me mercilessly and I do him. Nothing more to it then that.

The big celebrations here are a week earlier, "La fête nationale du Québec" 23/24 June. The holiday is the 24th, but there are a lot of events the evening before as well.
There are some very nice events here for Canada Day at the Old Port. I'll have to find the website for you.
But the MAIN EVENT on the 1st of July here is the massive moving day. So many people moving at the same time, many with a borrowed or rented truck. And most tenants here own their own fridges and stoves, so they must be moved... Not easy up those wrought-iron outdoor staircases.

lagatta, yes the website would be helpful. I almost forget, 1st July is always moving day in Montreal isn't it?
Looks like last year the parade started in St. Catherine street.

Those are great imec, thank you. I've bookmarked them now.
I already knew about the international fireworks display, and have all the details down, but good of you to look it up for me anyway.

You probably know Montreal better than I do, and I may take some heat from lagatta for this, but I enjoy eating at this place when I'm in town... www.restaurantholder.com/It's not a quiet romantic place (in fact it can get quite loud) but I think you said you'd be with the kids. Bustling bistro type place with reasonable priced food - steak frites is usually a good bet.

Why? I suggested Holder to people from out of town, who were in Old Montréal and needed a place to eat after a show. It is not a quiet, romantic place, but a bustling "brasserie".
Le Petit Extra is another good, reasonably priced bistro in the East End, near the Gay Village and the CBC/Radio-Canada building.

Thanks lagatta. I'm always a bit nervous recommending places in other people's home town - often I'm just not in touch with "where the locals go".

Locals don't necessarily need to go to a place for it to be good. Some good places are in total tourist zones that I avoid in Paris, but I know that the tourists are getting good meals there.

I just read this thread for the first time. My only thought is if my name was Billy Bob, I would think twice before I insulted anyone.

Happy Canada Day! Here is a run-down of some of what Canadians love and about their country and miss when they're away. (I didn't know that Malcom Gladwell was Canadian! *renewed respect for Canada*)

Thank you! Today in Toronto is perfect...mid morning it is about 20, sunny and the sky is almost a lapis blue. We are, sadly, in day five of a garbage strike and the traditional beautiful fireworks at Ashbridges Bay, a park on the shores of Lake Ontario, have been cancelled. Why? The city government decided to turn portions of 15 of our city parks into 'temporary dumps' as the smelly garbage piles up!!!!! (why not parking lots etc.?)....pathetic.
Interesting article, although I wouldn't agree with most of what they would miss.

Thanks! Gorgeous day here in Winnipeg. 2 major fireworks displays here tonight - although I think we'll pass as we'll be seeing serious fireworks on the 14th .
