So, I'm sitting here at the computer and see a flash of something yellow out of the corner of my eye. There, perched on the hammock rope just on the other side of the window was one of these: not my photoBlack-cowled Oriole -- Icterus prosthemelas <--- click to listen

OMG!!! Beautiful, yes, would get my attention!!! I have never seen a bird that shade of blue!! Was it that vivid as in the pic Bixa!!! Jeez..I am so envious. Do you keep,or have you ever done a "life list" of all the birds you've ever seen? Serious birders keep them. I did it once, was really quite impressed with how many, but, not as many as I would like to see. But,am not as serious a birder as some of these folks either. I wouldn't fly to Costa Rica for instance, just to go birding like some friends of mine do each year.

Yikes, I'm the opposite of a serious birder. Casimira, when I chose the picture, I was looking for one that clearly showed the markings and frankly did not notice how that picture makes it look blue. Really, to the naked eye the bird appears deepest black. I looked in google images under the common name. Just now I searched again under the Latin name & got completely different hits. Guess there's a moral to that story. I mentioned somewhere else on the forum, I think, about how pleased I am to see so many more vermilion flycatchers around this year. I'm sure it's due to the bird baths. I'm very frustrated I can't get the pictures off my camera to show the bird nest that the house sparrows built in the chimney of my water heater. I got it out and blocked their access. Then I felt guilty as they kept coming back & chirping in a puzzled way. I've rigged up a curved roofing tile on the pipes above the heater and set an small enameled pot up there so that it's not directly over the chimney. I think they're going to use it, but don't want to check yet so I won't scare them away.

WOW! What fantastic photos Bixa! Those nest ones in particular are too dear We get Orioles but they are so darn secretive - I hear beautiful melodic chirps coming from the trees all around my house but I'm darned if I can see the bird! The Oriole sounds like a kinda liquid song
