I'm off Monday for a short holiday to Palenque, maybe Bonampak, Tikal and points south. I'll likely only get as far as Honduras because my son has to return to Peru by the 26th. Is anyone here familiar with the border crossing at Corozal?

No problem with the border crossing although I was told it sometimes wasn't open, immigration would demand a payment and I wouldn't be able to hire a boat. All of the above turned out to be a big phoooy. Immigration was not only open but the head honcho there was super friendly and more than helpful. No mordita required. The boat was fine and the captain knew the river very well. We did manage to hit a huge log but only minimal damage to the boat. I blame the little kid who was supposed to be the look out.

Dang ~~ how big was the boat and what's a boat needed for there? (very little idea of the geography -- are you talking about crossing from Mexico into Guatemala?)
Did you have a good time?

Mex to Guate. 45 minute boat trip on the Usumacinta river to Bethel Guatemala. Treacherous looking river with croks sunning themselves on both shores. According to the captain rainy season is just now over so the river is wayyyy high. Huge eddys and a major current. Lots of half submerged trees and of course LOGS. Our boat went airborne for a heart stopping moment. (while I thought about crocodiles)

More, more! What happens when you finally reach Guatemala -- border guards, a town, vendors, jungle ..........?
