Aloha from Kaua'i! We stayed at the wonderful "Maison Zen" which is part of the Paris Zen Center in the 12th eme for 2 weeks this last March - fantastic location, charming place and extremely reasonable. maisonzen.com/We are planning our return trip to Paris for next September and we hope to stay there again - while it is part of the Paris Zen Center, and while you are invited to participate in morning meditation, it is not required at all - and you do have to remove your shoes before entering your flat - which since we do that here in Hawai'i anyway - was no problem. The flat was charmingly decorated, had a bathroom and kitchen, and was lovely and quiet. Malama Pono, (take care)

I'm very glad to hear that - I posted on it here some time back, I believe, but that was just because it looked nice, clean, calm and reasonable - I've never stayed there.
Ha, in Québec, we take off our shoes for very different reasons than Hawaiians do, but I always wear house slippers or sandals winter or summer - it keeps the floors much cleaner. I'd have to check on what kind of soft slippers are admissible by their rules - probably Chinese tai chi shoes with cotton soles are ok,if never worn outdoors. I have a hard time walking in sock feet as I have a touch of arthritis.
Went to their site and see they accept any kind of slippers, so even more orthopaedic kinds are cool.
That is a very nice part of Paris, close to Bastille, Gare de Lyon, Nation. Easily walkable to the Marais and other central-Eastern areas. It would be a wonderful place to stay while writing, or unwinding from work at a conference.

Looks like a commercial post since those are not really budget prices.

Indeed. Although La Maison Zen is not the cheapest place we've posted here, it certainly qualifies at it is self-catering, which saves a bundle, and with its quiet calm and free WiFi, would be a great place for someone who has to work during the stay. Not to mention the wee garden!
I can walk down many a Paris street and find a simple but clean place for half the prices the spammer posted.

Thank you, Koloagirl for your review of La Maison Zen. We could think of it as ‘upper budget’, although if two people stay it is extremely reasonable. I like #2, for 2 it is 100 € (50 € each) , but the one I love is the large studio #8, for 2, 130 €, or (65 € each)...it looks out onto the garden! Serene and beautiful. I love the courtyard and the exquisite shared room. (see the Articles within the site, Zen and the Art of Staying in Paris) Taking off my shoes is no problem, I do this at home. As Lagatta says, it's an excellent location and many benefits.

Aloha from Kaua'i! This site seems to have forgotten my name and password, so I'll be a "guest" for the time being (it didn't recognize my name when retrieving my password - oh well!). I see so many other wonderful and comparatively inexpensive places to stay in Paris - but I did love Maison Zen - we were lucky enough to have had it paid for us (merci!) by good friends - but we would definitely like to go back fall 2011 again. Our neighbor next door played the cello every evening and we'd fall asleep listening to that - which was wonderful! Who knows - so many choices have been suggested here - that is much of the fun of planning a trip - making those decisions! I heard it was snowing in Paris? Truth? Merci for listening - I'm just a Francophile looking forward to her 2nd visit to Paris - with great anticipation! Malama Pono, Janet

Oh, I hope you find your coordinates again soon, koloagirl!
I think a place like Maison Zen is well worth its price for the relative peace and quiet, not to mention the little garden, and in strictly economic terms by the fact that it is not necessary to eat out three times a day. Oh, of course I couldn't travel to Paris without at least some forays to restaurants and cafés, but I've reached the point where eating out three times a day is also tiring.
If you look at Kerouac's post on Cherbourg, there was rather heavy damp snow in northern France and I know there also was in Britain (even southern England). I haven't found out yet if it is snowing in Amsterdam...

As tourist season approaches, perhaps it is time for a bump of this thread.

Great fun reading through all the posts from the beginning This trip in a few weeks time we will be in only two locations in Paris : Returning from Amsterdam we will once again descend on the Ibis La Defense. As we are not in for any surprises (except perhaps a nice newly renovated room like we had last time - 14th floor) the delight for me will be checking on my little vineyard on top of the metro; at night looking over Paris from the shallow Basin Takis and waiting for the Eiffel Tower to burst into a million stars; walking to the metro every morning knowing there will be freshly baked pastries, baguettes and excellent coffee waiting at the little bakery inside.......oh I could go on and on, just as similar memories come flooding back to Janet, Jazz, Lagatta, and Mich ;D Then it will be a move to an apartment on Rue Du Grand Prieure in the 11th Arr. A stones throw from Metro Oberkampf and Canal St Martin. Quite expensive I thought at 149euros a day so I am expecting something really nice. Will definitely report back. A short stay of only nine days but hopefully enough time to enjoy new experiences, shopping for fresh ingredients at the market and finding that extraordinary cheese!

Do report back, though unless overseas sweetie is feeling particularly flush, that rental is too rich for my blood. (WiFi or Internet access is important though, as I pretty much have to be available to do some work if away).
I'm so heartened by your take on La Défense. I've only been there for business meetings, but I know how unlikely districts and suburbs can become "home".

I've been looking at various items about Saint-Denis to counter some of the scare stories about "la banlieue". And came across this: accueilbanlieues.blogspot.fr/ People in suburban towns close to Paris and in the Paris arrondissements 19e and 20e. This might be interesting, but I'd certainly want to be close to the métro or a tramline.
