That is wonderful news, but I'll believe in prosecution when I see it.

Silvio's a slimy one. I'm skeptical he can be easily got to, given his repeatedly shameful conduct and his still inexplicably high popularity. I was there when Prodi- whom it must be said has the charisma of a doorknob- unseated him, and while the Tuscans were by and large more than happy to see him sent packing from Chigi, much of Italy remains enamored of psiconano. I should probably not get started on Italian politics

As it said it my French guidebook, "Nobody admits to voting for him, but he keeps being elected."

I will be happy when he is in prison and stripped of all civic rights, such as being able to ever run for office again -- or own a television station.

He'll never be in prison, as Italian law forbids incarceration of anyone over 70. I'm glad Italian law is humanitarian in that sense, but am wondering what they do with violent offenders. People live longer and in better health than before, and I know 70-year-olds who are active and athletic - and could kill someone if they wanted to. Suppose there is some kind of house arrest, but that may not be secure enough.
But Berlusconi, not a violent criminal but a very shady fellow indeed, could be stripped of media assets and certainly of the right to run for office.

This subject constantly mystifies the French as well, even though the French often do not vote for the right person either -- but they don't keep bringing the same wrong one back!

That Slate article is good, although I wish it were longer. I would say one huge problem with human nature is that people often don't seem to really want democracy and accountability in their politicians. What they really want is a big daddy to take care of them. Maybe that explains why there can be an almost affectionate attitude towards behavior in leaders that wouldn't be tolerated in lesser mortals.
