Asia comes to the Lot at the Cazals market. There is a wide variety of foods, sauces and seasonings from Thailand, Vietnam, China and Indonesia. I had nothing like it anywhere near we were living before. Five varieties of strawberries to choose from. He said they would continue until the end of October. Lots of cheese stalls to choose from, including several selling their own goat's cheeses. Local wine to taste and buy. We are out of the olive growing region but there is still a wide choice. Every market in France has a stall selling paella. Also there are chickens on the rotisserie and a stall with a man from Reunion selling its specialities.

Baz: This looks exactly like the one in front of the French Stock market that Mr. T & I found on Friday after walking up and down Rue Vivianne. The huge pan of Paella that we found had shrimp and calamari. We have pictures which we will post later.

Looks like a good little market. I am really happy to have seen over the years a lot of the exotic products making their way to the small markets. If I ever entered that business, I would definitely go for that niche, but I think that I wouldn't just sell the individual products but also some ready-to-eat specialties. When I see what great business the Asian delis do in Paris, I am relatively certain that in this day and age of microwave ovens and cable TV to entice people, they absolutely want to try some of this stuff.

Yes, that is pleasant indeed - I remember when such products (except the most generic supermarket varieties, very bland in France) were hard to find except in larger cities. But o Gord, the cheeses!
The guy with the dark hair in the wine photo looks like a friend originally from not far from your market, baz. Cahors, I guess?
Yum!

In any case, seeing the Asian stand, it is obvious that the person in charge of the place probably goes to Paris or another big city regularly and can bring back anything you want by special request, probably even some of the fresh products once it is clear that you are reliable.

Baz! It looks as though you've hit the jackpot in your new home. This is great. From what you've written elsewhere, I'm assuming you can simply walk to this market, correct? My god -- the cheeses, the olives! And it's as though they knew you were coming to town and hastened to add the Asian products you like to use. Congratulations!

Bixa, the market is 3.5 ks away. Certainly I could walk but I wouldn't want to carry that much back.
K2, you are right. He said that he would get anything we wanted. I'll ask him about Tilda Basmati rice, which is the best. At the moment we are dependent on people driving from England to bring 5 or 10 kilo sacks.

Oh yeah -- no, you wouldn't want to tote stuff back. Still, that's a quick jaunt in the car and a wonderful thing to have close by.

The Reunion stall is very small and high so you don't have a good show of food. I'll see if Mrs Faz can do better next time she goes.

Baz, there is a big Chinese/exotic food supermarket in Toulouse called Paris Store. They might have your rice. It's a closer drive than England.

Made me giggle, Baz. What a great market and I am still amazed about the whole "sunday market" thing too. I imagine that it will triple in sizes comes the summer season.
