One major shift was noted in a recent major poll of French values. While the importance of family, work or friends remained quite stable and a few other values have evolved a little one way or the other, the French now view equality to be much more important than freedom. This was a major surprise to the polling institute. Meanwhile, it is considered a given that a major ecological catastrophe is just around the corner and only half of the population thinks that we will be smart enough to find a way to fix it.

It would be interesting if there were interviews of those polled. Perhaps equality was placed above liberty because equality = fairness = liberty? Whereas "liberty" might have been considered a more vague designation.

Well, the blurb at the bottom says that 3071 face-to-face one hour interviews were conducted, so I am sure they have a wealth of details that goes far beyond this condensation.
I would think that "equality" suddenly became important when all of this talk of golden handshakes, golden hellos, golden goodbyes, stock options and gigantic rewards for bankrupting companies and putting thousands of people out of work starting hitting the news.
