Today we visited a lavender farm in Kent. It was beautiful and smelt amazing - sorry you can't smell the pictures! The tents in the last picture are massage tents, they do massages in the fields and the tents are in case of rain.

Ohhhhhhhhh, Tilly!
That is beautiful balm for the eyeballs absolutely glorious! I LOVE that the rope or pipe in the fields is lavender colored. I suddenly want everything in my life to be combinations of the apple green and the purple in your first photo.
Are you insanely relaxed right now?

Nice pics Tilly. Where abouts in Kent is the farm? That is the neck of the woods where I come from...
Any idea what the uses are of Lavender, is it just used for perfume?

Yes Bixa, I am very relaxed, I am burning some lavender oil. Zzzzzzzzzzz. The farm is in Eynsford Deyana - I think not too far from where you mentioned your mum lives. They sell lots of lavender products - jams, chutneys, apple and lavender juice, lavender essence for cooking and also all sorts of oils, candles, room sprays, polish, shampoos etc etc. They sell lots of lavender essential oil which has lots of uses. I use it for headaches and it great for relaxation. These are some uses of the oil www.organicfacts.net/organic-oils/natural-essential-oils/health-benefits-of-lavender-essential-oil.htmlThey also sell it dried in pillows - because of its sleep inducing properties. I bought some loose dried lavender and hops (also good for sleep) to make a pillow. My grandma made me a hop pillow when I was a kid and the smell is so nostalgic for me.

I never think of lavender growing in England. After all, it needs a lot of sun and some dry weather.

Tilly - those are beautiful pictures. I imagined that fields of lavender were only grown in the South of France! If Eynsford is anywhere near Sevenoaks I might visit it.

It is pretty close to Sevenoaks, the farm is nice and Eynsford itself is pretty and with a lovely pub to eat by a stream full of little paddlers with their fishing nets!

I never knew lavender had so many uses. The farm must smell good from miles away.

Lest everyone forget, one variety of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is commonly called English lavender.
Yardley has a venerable line of products featuring the scent & name of English lavender.

There are lavender farms in Oregon, so I am not surprised about them being in Kent. This farm is in Hood River, Oregon. I buy my cooking lavender from them. Their site is www.lavenderfarms.net[/img]

Amazingly beautiful tilly, the odor must have been mind boggling. I can't grow it here because of the humidity, not unless I created some little micro climate for it. I always wonder if the dry stuff one sees available has a different scent or is it just a weaker, fainter reminisce of the fresh.Thank you.

Casimira, have you tried growing Lavandula dentata? It's more tolerant of wet and heat, although you still might want to keep it in an elevated pot for extra care.

I guess this is a post I missed while on vacation. Gorgeous colors tilly, the aroma must be divine! I'd like to park myself right in the middle of one of those fields with a bottle of white wine.
