A lot of you have been to Paris, and I'm sure that some of you have seen the space invaders. And I'm sure that some of you have no idea what I am talking about. Since the 1990's, a French artist using the pseudonym 'Invaders' has been placing small mosaics on buldings in Paris. What could possibly be better than a mosaic tile to represent the visible pixels of early video games? But these things are not just in Paris -- you can see them in most of the world now, if you know where to look. Among the cities that have been invaded are Berlin, London, Geneva, Hong Kong, Istanbul, New York, Varanasi, Rotterdam, Los Angeles, Perth, Tokyo and Bangkok. Over the past couple of days, I went looking for space invaders in Paris, and besides the two above, I also found these... Here is a website that shows a lot more of them: space.invaders.paris.free.fr/And here is the official website, which was working yesterday but which is not working at the time that I am posting this: www.space-invaders.comIf anybody finds any space invaders, please post them here!

Those are adorable! I'm particularly happy to see them as I'm presently reading a long article about Andy Warhol and Pop Art, and looking at Invader's work is expanding the whole topic for me. Thanks!

How interesting! I had no idea, now I'll have to go searching next time I visit Paris.

Someone put these up with flashing leds incorporated and and alarmed some very humorless people. Either that or it was a dream that seemed uncannily real.

Yes, that happened in Boston a few years ago.

Oh, why did you go and tell him? This would have been a fun opportunity to gaslight Fumobici!

The second photo is the only one I know of on the Champs Elysées. It is on the outer railing of the entrance to the George V metro station. I am thinking that some of the tiles were peeled off by tourists getting souvenirs.

There seems to my eye to be at least two different artists.
I like that "gaslight" verb, Bixa. New one on me. Based on the Boyer/Bergman film?

Copycat commando mosaic artists?
It's an oldie, Lola, but I don't know how old. Clever you to catch it & its origins on the first encounter!

I've spotted (but not yet photographed) another SI. I'm trying to do them 2x2 from now on.

Somehow these seem worthy of a Fred Vargas novel.

When my husband tries to act as if I've forgotten something, I say with a Boyer accent: Paula....Pau... la! to let him know I'm not falling for that trick. These invaders are great.

My goodness Kerouac you will know every lane and alley in Paris soon. You are turning up strange symbols everywhere, including that Mouse. These symbols must have meanings.
Would they show that a particular gang controls a particular area?

I went on a walking tour in Paris a while back and the tour guide was a Brit with that sense of British humour (notice my British spelling) that I love so much. He referred to the "invader" as having "colonized" certain buildings. Kerouac, I am from Boston and remember well the incident you mentioned. It was a huge over-reaction by the police and media. The invader in this case happened to be based on a cartoon character on a popular tv show.

As my witty English tour guide friend would say to his tourist clients when explaining the Space Invaders "Your building has been colonized".

"Invader" has been extremely active in Paris over the last few months. I keep seeing more and more new ones popping up in areas where they were not seen before.
