I liked the Eurythmics.
I had however forgotten about those awful 1980s fluffy hairdos.

I think after seeing your choices Annie that we were brought up somewhat differently.

oh yes, Mark! I didn't really go out much until my early twenties. I had access to a limited musical choice when I was growing up.

I've always loved "Jules et Jim". Unfortunately, "La tourbillon de la vie" is currently used in a margarine commercial, but I still like it.

Oh, I love that and clicked on it even though I know it always turns into an earworm for me.
In a similar vein, how many people see laundry blowing on a line and hear this song ~

Ah, thank you Chexbres for that wonderful contribution. In a bygone era, our local saloon had a fabulous old jukebox and that song was on it. The bartender there, an imposing figure who fancied wearing beautiful large "picture" hats that only she could pull off, would put that song on and for a few minutes one felt as though they had been transported to Paris. I had not heard it in ages. Merci!

Some sentimental memories attached to this one: And this one was a favourite tune of my mother's; I forgot about it for years, till I heard some street musicians playing it some years after her death, and then they moved on before I could ask them what it was. It was only years later again that I was able to identify it, thanks to the internet: My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

That is a lovely melody, Patrick. I don't think I've ever heard it before.

It's the daftest thing, k. I have the distinctivest memory of my mother singing it as she did some piece of housework she hated, and it stuck in the back of my mind for years as somehow emblematic of her, which is why those street musicians struck such a chord with me. Years after that, it turned up briefly in an ancient movie on TV, and by then I could look up some of the words I remembered on the internet, and finally uncovered it. And when I was recounting all this to my brother last year or so, he said in the most matter-of-fact way, as though it was something to be taken as read "Oh yes, they had an old record of John McCormack singing it"..................! I guess this falls under Celtic music, doesn't it Patrick? It's really lovely. There's just something about this combination of instruments that gets me all melancholy, but in a good way.

Yes, chexbres, it's an Irish tune. There are several different recordings on Youtube, including the McCormack, but I'm afraid I don't particularly like the nasal headtones of his voice or the somewhat over-gloopy sentimental style of delivery that was so popular back in the day (naturally, I prefer what I remember as the clarity of my mother's voice). Mention of old movie songs makes me think of this:
It makes me want to dance and reminds me of being in Corfu at age 20, going out every evening and listening and dancing to a mixture of Greek and pop music.

I always found that awfully ear-wormy without really liking it, Bixa. On Monday afternoon I went downtown in Toulouse and had a coffee with a friend in a place I hadn't been before. At one point I realized they were playing this: What strikes me now is how dorky the audience looks in that video! The flowery girl with white gogo boots The singers are cool though.

I have never even heard of that song ("Sally"), Bixa. It was probably popular when I was living with my grandparents for a year in 1964.

It was released in autumn of '63 and was a hit in France as well. You may have been a tad too young to be paying attention, especially with the fun distraction of being with your grandparents. I'm mainly surprised it got past you since it was an oldies radio staple for ages. Anyway, it has a fairly interesting history, including having been covered numerous times. If you scroll to the bottom of this page, you can hear one of the French versions.
