Today being the infamous 4/20, designated Global Marijuana Day. Lots of different celebrations/observances of here.
What's happening where you are?
I'm always slightly amused by this as so many people take it so seriously.
Personally,I watch from afar and hope that my friends and acquaintances don't get arrested.

Never heard of it. Is this an instance of "global" meaning the States? Like the "world series"?

No,when I say "global" I am referring to all over the world. I only heard of it in the last few years. I do know it is observed in all of North America,and several European countries as mentioned above.

It's the 18th of June in France. June because the month of 'juin' and 'joint' have the same pronunciation in French. "L'appel du 18 joint." -- June 18th, 1940 was the date of De Gaulle's famous call to resistance from London.

I have definitely heard of it. It has also become "skip day" at high schools here. My son is a high school senior, and about half of his class skipped school that day. He goes to a pretty small school (about 40 seniors). Anyway, his teachers took all the seniors who did come to school that day out for ice cream. And it turns out my son was actually one of the ones who got ice cream. (But I'm pretty sure he smoked some pot with his friends after school in honor of 420).
