Oh, I must add that imec's photo of the clock at the Musée d'Orsay with Sacré Cœur visible through the face is just perfect.

I could actually use some help figuring out this clock ... the little one above divided into eight divisions marked by letters (or a cross at the three o'clock position), this is the one we couldn't figure out. Can any of you worldly sophisticates clue me in? Um, I think one needs to be a little unworldly to get it. ;D The markings on the the little clock do not conform to o'clock positions as we know them. This is what I think it is, quoting from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liturgy_of_the_Hours : By the end of the fifth century, the Liturgy of the Hours was composed of a Vigil or Night Service and seven day offices, of which Prime and Compline seem to be the last to appear, since the fourth-century Apostolic Constitutions VIII, iv, 34 does not mention them in the exhortation: "Offer up your prayers in the morning, at the third hour, the sixth, the ninth, the evening, and at cock-crowing".[3] These eight hours were known by the following names: * Matins (during the night), sometimes referred to as Vigils or Nocturns, or in monastic usage the Night Office; it is now called the Office of Readings * Lauds or Dawn Prayer (at Dawn) * Prime or Early Morning Prayer (First Hour = 6 a.m.) * Terce or Mid-Morning Prayer (Third Hour = 9 a.m.) * Sext or Midday Prayer (Sixth Hour = 12 noon) * None or Mid-Afternoon Prayer (Ninth Hour = 3 p.m.) * Vespers or Evening Prayer ("at the lighting of the lamps") * Compline or Night Prayer (before retiring)

The Catholic I had handy to ask wasn't old enough to remember pre Vatican II and hadn't any more clue than I did. I am essentially a complete innocent as regards liturgical matters.

I don't know that lay people ever observed those hours in the 20th century. But they're mentioned in literature and the other arts -- Millet's The Angelus, Monteverdi's Vespers, etc. What tipped me off was the cross on the little clock, and its position right under the bell, as you read about a certain hour being rung.

greyghost1, hahahahha! I did a double take and thought maybe someone was pilfering my images! Here's my similar take on that clock in the Orsay... reply # 21ditto, imec! I had just uploaded this image in preparation for posting it somewhere (silhouettes, maybe) when I discovered this Clock thread: (I wish I could go back and mess with the exposure though - there's too little information there to bring out the distant church with software enhancements.) (Since the Wizard has changed the quoted photos to references, y'all will just have to go looking for the other two images in the matched set. Or take my word for it! )

Yes, the clock sculpture is in front of the Saint Lazare station in Paris, which has two courtyards. In the other courtyard, there is a similar sculpture made of beaten up suitcases.
