More Eurovision commentary: Eurovision 2021: James Newman on coming last for the UKWhile I am delighted that the top three songs were not in English, because I hate that so many countries think that that is the only way to win, I fear that the real reason is because the vast majority of the public could not understand the lyrics. When you listen to most pop songs, particularly Eurovision songs, the lyrics are generally so appalling that it can be easy to be turned off, even when the tune is catchy. It seemed to me that more songs were in the national language this year than usual (Russia, Serbia, Spain...)

We're not there yet, but all of the Eurovision countries have begun their selection process for this year. France has whittled the 3000+ entries down to 40 and then to twelve (compared to just 685 last year, but since Barbara Pravi came in 2nd, it inspired far more singers). The final selection will take place on March 5th, decided by both the public and a professional jury.
Just to amuse you, here are some French finalists, even though they sound to me like an entry from Belarus or Azerbaijan. (They are actually singing in Breton, so it is authorised as a language for France.)

And so the song in Breton has been chosen to represent France in Milan in May.

The song is okay but the Breton bellydancer in front seems a little odd.

I have grown to quite like the song, too, but I have been amused that I am not the only person who has commented on the various sites (like I did at #272) tht it sounds more like a song that would have been presented by Azerbaijan. Just for the record, this will be the second time that France has submitted at song sung in Breton.
Right now, the various sites seem confident that Ukraine will win this year and would do so even if they present an old woman playing a washboard, but who knows what the situation will be in May?
Soon I will start checking what the other countries are submitting since I know that none of you will, since you are above all this. I don't mind. I really like it. I continue to believe that the Eurovision song contest is a totally valid test of the situation of European unity (or disunity). And it is one of the only events in which ordinary people are consulted.

With a little luck, Australia will rethink the costume and accessories.

I just read that the US is going to have its own song contest to compete with Eurovision!
"Starting in two weeks, the American Song Contest will see performers from all 50 US states, plus five US territories and Washington DC gather together to sing original material and compete for a prize that will be awarded in May."
It might be a bit less diverse than Eurovision of course, since we also have Israel and Australia.

Continuing to explore the murky depths of Eurovision, here we have Italy #2, also known as San Marino. (To be fair, France also used to use this trick with Monaco.)
As we all know Italy won last year, but Italy also came in second the year before with Mahmood singing "Soldi." And now we have Mahmood again in association with Blanco. Just like all other Italian entries of the last few years, this song won the Sanremo festival. They will have to make it a bit shorter since the time limit is 3 minutes at Eurovision.

It would be impossible to overstate how big a deal the Sanremo festival is in Italy. Impossible.

We know that even in France. In fact, it is apparently the reason that Italy stopped participating in the Eurovision contest for a few years. "Sanremo is all that counts; we don't care about that other crap." Then they realised that they had painted themselves into a corner and came back. As important as Sanremo is, nobody pays attention to it outside of Italy (or San Marino or the Vatican).

Clearly not for reasons of musical quality, Ukraine is at the top of the official bookmakers odds at the moment. Nevertheless, it is hard not to feel moved by the sight of Ukrainians singing anything right now. But also one must not forget that all of these bookmakers are British and have no understanding of the tastes of the rest of Europe. If one sets Ukraine aside, it seems as though Italy is the favourte again this time.

While Ireland remains the country that has won the contest the most times (7), I think that we can safely say that they will not win in 2022.
Sweden has won six times. Not a chance this year.

I just suffered through the first semifinal of Eurovision, and I must share with you the country that I found to be the absolute worst (and which was not qualified for the finals thank god). so here is Latvia.
Ukraine was also part of this programme tonight, and they DID qualify, noraml since they had the best song in this group.

We should not ignore the new bastard child of Eurovision, the American Song Contest which just took place. The winner was Oklahoma, and the song looks so much like a Eurovision song that maybe the United States should be invited like Australia.

I don't think it was a surprise to anyone that Ukraine won. It might have been different if Russia hadn't invaded the country but the sympathy vote was most important.
