Iam really surprised by the voting ( not about the Ukraine of course - a forgone conclusion) Are we finally forgiven ?

I personally did not like the UK song, and the singer gives me the creeps. He looks like he is incapable of not smiling and would have the same expression on his face while slowly plunging a knife into your guts.

I wasn't keen on the GB song either. Snippets had been played on tv every now and then, enough for me to wonder what all the fuss was about. I know that the guy has a lot of followers on social media. Maybe the European votes were to shut down the British persecution complex...everybody knew that Ukraine was going to win..but it was heaps better than the British entry anyway.

In its neverending search for ways of losing the Eurovision contest, which France came dangerously close to winning last time, they have elminated the usual method with a public vote this year, and a small (secret?) committee has chosen the Québecoise singer La Zarra (real name Fatima Zahra Hafdi) to represent France. No song yet.
I know that John Lydon (Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols) has said that he is willing to represent the United Kingdom.
Looks like Ukraine might win for the second time in a row.

The world used to be so incredibly innocent. Hard to imagine that this was the winning song for Great Britain in 1976.

Isn't it awful? There were a lot of really terrible 'easy listening' pop acts in the 70s and 80s and this is a fine example of 'this sort of crap' >>>shudder<<<

Of course, but it is sometimes possible to feel nostalgic for how innocent it all was, and many people still melt when they hear the last lyric of the song.

Get ready to cringe. France has finally released its Eurovision song.

For those who go for something a bit disco (and the Dusty Springfield School of Hand Acting), that could well be a contender. It could certainly do well round the summer holiday nightclubs - in 1992. My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

Australia has released its Eurovision song. I don't think we have to worry about them.

The UK entry is expected to be announced this week. And it seems all tickets for the event in Liverpool (semi-finals and rehearsals as well) were sold out in barely half an hour. My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

I completely approve of countries singing in the national language, and this seems to be a growing trend in recent competitions after all of the years of 90% English, but by the same token the Italian song seems to have stronger lyrics than music, and this won't help it this year (probably).

It doesn't look like it's going to be a good year, although 10 of these songs will be culled before the final.
For those of us who worried that they would run out of weird costumes, eccentric makeup and oulandish hairstyles, we needn't have worried. The songs are presented alphabetically, so please don't abandon your viewing just because Albania's song is so atrocious. Ukraine will not win this year.

I just watched them all. I would certainly cull Germany, Croatia, Australia, Ireland (those bags on their heads!) and the UK for a start. The rest sort of blur into strobe lights, gruesomely long fingernails. Except for the Italian who is good looking.

So happy to discover Gustaph. I wo der why sone homosexuals have a need to overdo it. But at least he is not racist, that is already a good point. But he is 42. I personally think these contests should help young ones, not guys who haven't met succes at 42. (He is said to be known in Flanders where he was in the top 50 x years ago - totally unknown in Wallonia- you said Belgium ?).

Both Belgium and Switzerland have language sharing agreements for alternate years to prevent civil unrest. That's probably better than France which is using a Moroccan singer from Canada this year.

The wonderful thing for me was that one of my friend's son was one of the dancers during the opening section and then again during Rita Ora's performance . She was so proud of him. It has been a tough journey for him , not least because he was a dancer on a cruise ship that got marooned for weeks during covid.

We watched most of the first semi-final. I was quite impressed with the entries, and the whole thing was pretty slick compared to the coronation concert that we'd watched beforehand (mostly on fast forward...)
