... One of the USB devices connected to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."
Has anyone else had this problem and been able to resolve it?
This is the message I get when trying to download photos off my camera. The camera itself says "connecting to computer", but Windows claim the usb port does not work.
I have five of them and have tried them all. I've also looked at scads of tech sites. This problem has been reported as far back as '07. It's discouraging to read through the far-reaching fixes tried by people much, much more technically knowledgeable than I, all without success.
Any suggestions that don't involve buying a new computer? Thanks.

Errrr.... no. It's the beginning of the end.

It's not related to the age of the computer. You can't imagine how many threads, blogs, sites, etc. I've looked at about this. And it occurs in Vista, XP, 7, etc.

I had this computer do that. Any device I plugged into a USB port gave me the "device not recognized" error. After trying what seemed like everything else, I eventually had to do a system restore back to a restore point prior to when the problem occurred. That cured it though.

Thanks, Fumobici. That was one of the first things I did. I've also disabled all the ports & let Windows reinstall them, unplugged, re-set stuff, etc. etc. I could weep with frustration. I may try Restoring to a point in the more distant past to see if that does anything.

I've had it too but it has never been forever. Maybe the driver needs updating for some reason or other?

Thanks, HW ~~ according to Windows, the driver is fine & dandy.
What's so frustrating about this is that it's a long-term recurring Windows problems, but none of the fixes suggested by Windows work for anyone.
(and hey ~~ welcome back!)

The first thing you tried was shutting down and restarting the computer, right? If you repower it with the device plugged into the USB port, perhaps it will recognize the device and everything will be good as new. Perhaps.

bixa, first thing that's not been answered for sure is that you've tried the obvious thing and plugged a different device in to the same port. And what the result was. Plus, is it difficult to plug your camera into a different computer to see if the same fault occurs?

Could also be the cable...

True. That little cable has been used a bunch.
I have a speedstick around here somewhere. I've never used one, but I guess I could use it to test whether the usb thing is Windows acting up, or the cable that's bad.

yep, first eliminate all the simple things. If you've not done so already.

Damn!
Just used the flash drive and it worked fine. Tried the camera cable again & was told Windows doesn't recognize the device. That means it's the effing cable, right?
AAAAaaaarrrrrghh ~ WHERE am I going to get a cable for this camera around here? I have another usb cable with a similar plug for the camera end, but the casing for the plug is just the teeniest bit larger, so it won't go into my camera.
But thanks, guys. I can go to a friends house & plug in there, but it looks as though the problem has been identified, correct?

bixa, remember though you've got two things connected to the computer - the cable and then the camera. It still could be either. You need to either try another cable or try another camera or try another computer. You need to work the permutations until all are eliminated. Only then, if the cable and camera work on a different computer can you say for sure that it is your computer at fault.

My cell phone has a USB cable that has the same ends as my camera cable. I've substituted them in a pinch.

my mp3 player has a cable similar to my camera so i use either for either sometimes...
did you try different cards in your camera btw? i sometimes have problems iwth one of my cards. though there, it's not that the computer won't recognize it, just that it keeps telling me to reformat it (which i do occasionally when it is empty). the other cards never have these problems. could it be that there is somethign wrong with the card?

I don't have any other cables that will fit the camera.
I only have one card for the camera. So far, I have no reason to think it might be the card.
The thing about testing the camera on another computer -- would I have to load the software that came with the camera onto the other computer?

Usually not, it depends on the operating system. Usually the software that comes with the camera that you download has all the bells and whistles, operating instructions and help stuff. But often if you connect a device to Windows it'll faff around for a bit but eventually recognise it. Me and the kids have four different cameras and I've not loaded any software as all I want to do is download the pictures to a folder, which it does without complaint (after several prompts about where and what name etc).

Thanks, Mark. I hated to ask my friends to load something on their computer. Also, I suspect their computer is more virus-y than mine, so was edgy about that, too.
I have a super good tech guy, but he's all the way downtown and sometimes takes forever to do something. That's why I'd like to eliminate all possibilities before calling him. There's always the chance he could simply advise me over the phone. He might be able to get me a replacement cable, too, if that turns out to be the problem.

whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine ~~ Okay, I realize this is my problem, but I just need to grouse about it. Charlie's brother told me he had a usb cable for a camera of his that had been stolen. So, I go over to Charlie's house. She has the same kind of camera her brother had so she gave me her cable to try. It fit! Then I plugged my camera into her computer using her cable and turned the camera on. It just came on normally, without connecting to the computer. Then her brother came over with his extra cable and said that probably the reason my camera wasn't connecting was because Charlie's computer is set up to recognize her camera. This cheered me immensely. So, I take his computer and come home and try it out and I think you all know the rest.

When will computers ever be made simple.
We have a computer downstairs and one 2 storeys up in my little workroom. Twenty minutes ago when I switched on my workroom computer a notice flashed up on the sceen warning me that a problem had arisen. Another computer with the same IP address had been detected by Windows.
Come off it, guys. There have been two computers using the same IP address through the Livebox for nearly a year.

I feel like throwing a party whenever I get my Livebox to recognize a new computer in the first place.

Stand back, world, because Bixa is back in the saddle again!
Yesssssssssss ~~ I am now the proud owner of an Acteck ACR-450 Smart All in 1 Card Reader and 3 Port USB HUB.
I picked that baby up today from my tech guy, brought it home, attached it, stuck my camera's memory card in it, and it obligingly sucked out all 73 pictures on the card and put them into my Documents.
YAAAAAAAAAY!

Glad you've solved your problem, bixa. For others who are having similar problems:
For less than 10 dollars at Walmart you can pick up a Targus card reader/writer for SD/SDHC/MMC cards that plugs into a USB port. (For a few bucks more, you can get one that recognizes multiple other types of memory cards.)
Our computer came with an integrated chip reader, but we foolishly didn't try it out until after the 1 year warranty was up. Of course, it does not work. But the chip reader works great.
