Eleven days to go until most of the world stops to watch this for a month.
Carrefour is considered not to be very supportive of the French team, because they have a super promo on giant flat screen televisions right now: "Your TV refunded 100% if France wins the final!"

Well, I guess the stores in SA could offer the same. I shouldn't say that should I?
Carrefour will be in for a big shock if the French team pull a miracle!

I bet they took out insurance against their own offer, just in case.

I don't think there is much risk of France winning. Unlike England who will sail through, have as hard time against Argentina after the qualifying rounds but ultimately win through beating Spain 2-1 in the final.

I don't think there is much risk of France winning. That's what a lot of people said 4 years ago too, and they made it into the final. You just never know with the French !

I agree that they are completely unpredictable -- got wiped out of the first round 8 years ago.

My daughter's backing France and I'm going to go with England. There's a pub here that'll open at 0900 on match days and serve the cuisine of some participating countries. Arsenal's her team normally.

No African team in the semis. Last 4: Brasil, Argentina, Italy, Germany

I am not a soccer/football follower, but I am told that SA is sh*t hot at the moment, so I am now quietly optimistic that we will at least get through the first round.
Still supporting Bafana Bafana all the way!

The home team at the World Cup always gets a great boost just from that.

As usual, some of the French (not the best ones) have expressed irritation that the French national team is mostly African born. I recommend that they support Algeria in this case, because the majority of the Algerian team was born in France.

It is a tradition here to go watch matches in cafés and bars - what time do most matches start (in local time, we can calculate time zones)? Think we'll be drinking more espresso than beers at the time the play gets underway.
Palesa, one often sees the beautiful South African flags in Amsterdam. Of course the real economic ties evident to non-specialists are in diamonds and in wines. How do people down there feel about the World Cup? Great pride, feeling it was money spent on luxury infrastructures instead of other needs, or both?

Viewing times are ok here. The latest matches will be at 2pm but I think most around 9pm.

Lagatta, I think that there are mixed feeling. I had not got swept up in the World Cup hype until I returned from abroad recently, and the atmosphere is just awesome. Everything is so colourful and everyone is united and behind Bafana Bafana, which makes a change for a country that is as divided as SA is.
I think for the most part people are Proudly South African and happy to be hosting the event, I do think that they are a bit too optimistic about the amount of revenue that will be generated, but overall, I think people are 'happy' with the money spent on the infrastructure.
This feeling will no doubt change if Bafana Bafana get booted out in the first round.

This feeling will no doubt change if Bafana Bafana get booted out in the first round. France is not happy to be in the same group as South Africa, because they don't want to beat them... yet (assuming they can, which is far from certain). But I'm sure that the French will enthusiastically support South Africa if they themselves get booted out.

Yes, I figured out that is when they are here, and checked at the Radio-Canada site.
hwinpp, I think you mean the late matches will be at 2 am, no?
Certainly hope Bafana Bafana wins the first round at least - it would be lovely to see an African team win the Cup, but I guess the big Western European and South American sides just have more money for coaching and such. In Europe there are many gifted African players, and of course as Kerouac said there are many Africans and descendants of Africans (North and West, the former French colonies) on the side.

Apart from South Africa and Mexico where it was 1 - 1. So I'm not sure who the first nil draw was you mentioned as there's only been two games.

Oh, that's right, it was 1-1. I was on the road and just heard 'match nul' on the radio, which just means 'tie game'.

France certainly looked uninspired, although to be fair the Uraguayan side was playing with great energy defensively. Soooo much talent on the French squad. How they can look so decidedly mediocre is truly a mystery.

It's because all the rest of the time they are prima donnas in football clubs in Germany, England, Italy and Spain. They don't know or like each other.

I am just wondering how the Mexican's managed to move the goal post for that last try from Bafana Bafana that hit the post, had they left the goal posts in place it would have been 2-1, which was my prediction

My dark horse tournament pick, Argentina, just were almost tied by a Nigerian squad that have been outplayed the whole match. 1-0 scores are never safe.

What's with that silly stripe on the American football jerseys? Did they think they were going to the Miss America pageant? (Just seeing the last 5 minutes of the match -- I was out at the movies.)
