I am thrilled for Spain, but that was a long game that was kind of boring most of the time. And David Villa was really off today.
I'm very happy for Iniesta. He handled that goal beautifully, I thought.
And K2, I agree with your assessment of the Dutch team. I thought they played like thugs, honestly.

Well Done Spain!
And I am very proudly South African, I think we did a brilliant job hosting an awesome World Cup. So all the critics that said we couldn't do it, you should all eat raw Octopus!

A nail biting end. Well done to Spain. Did anyone notice how the manager of the Dutch team accepted his silver medal and then took it right off while walking away? I couldn't help feeling bad for the Dutch though. To lose in the last few minutes of the overtime, can't be much fun. Quite a few yellow cards on both sides.

Well, I am biased as was supporting Spain but I didn’t feel sorry for the Dutch team, I think they played like thugs and didn’t deserve to win. To me, the manager taking off his silver medal just sums up their unsporting attitude.

I agree with Tilly. It wasn't a good game and I was not impressed by the Dutch at all. It looked like they were trying to destroy the Spanish team physically. Thuggish is the right word. In fact, I turned it off 10 minutes into the 2nd half. The game between Germany and Uruguay was much better.

The Dutch national team have been thugs for a long time; anybody who follows sports in Europe knows that half of them should be in jail.
It is so strange, because the Ajax Amsterdam team was such a delight to watch in its glory days and it made the Dutch seem so civilized and graceful. Football has turned ugly in the Netherlands in recent years.

I heard on the radio yesterday that the coach of the North Korean team has been sentenced to 14 years of hard labour for letting the team get beaten. They particularly focused on the 7-0 game against whoever it was.

I was expecting something like that. Meanwhile, for those who haven't been following the continued disgrace of the French team, for the first friendly game of the new season (against Norway, I think), not one single player who was on the World Cup team has been selected for the new French team.

So, speaking of the French team, they played really well today, for women.
We took our 17 yo guest from Rouen to a cafe to watch the match today, even though she's not particularly interested in football. It was a fun place to watch, with a nice little international crowd including fellow genuine French.
A local woman, Becky Saurbrunn, got put in for defense in place of the one who got red card on Sunday. It was a fun game. I rooted for whoever was behind or had lost momentum. Would've been happy either way.

So, speaking of the French team, they played really well today, for women. Are you implying that the winning team was not composed of women as well?

Not at all. I imply that women's soccer is played by people who aren't men and is therefore, in the eyes of some, inferior.
