I liked the yellow gown. I'd have preferred lady Gaga's dress if it didn't have the yardage of superfluous material draped around the place. As for the rest...meh. Too much boobage and Jessica Rabbit is the ONLY woman who can pull off a split skirt. Period.
(She said sitting in fleecy pjs with bunny rabbits on and fluffy slippers)

I'm in at-home work garb - a new "base layer" - fancy name for a thermal undershirt, though actually there is a sport bra underneath. Very happy to have extra warm but light layer as it is -15 with strong winds here. Then an old cable pullover - pretty violet. Black jeans embellished with mandatory cat hair. An old but beloved pinwale corduroy shirt and a polar fleece shawl complete my chic ensemble, along with fabric Doc Martens mary janes which are divinely comfy and supportive.
I've really lost interest in the awards clothing as it is so unreal, and often not even particularly attractive. Not only boobage but the bosoms of the outfits don't fit well.

But this is the new contradictory world of #MeToo. We are damned if we are interested in extravagant women's clothing and damned if we think it is unworthy of interest.

Actually, I am interested in clothing and style, female, male or unisex. But I do find that many of these things are horribly caricatural and not particularly good designs.

Well I like clothes too and usually try to wear things that match. But these outfits are not meant as examples of anything worn in the real world so they are prefectly open to judgement and criticism. It is unfortunate that designers actually produce this stuff and that most of these celebrities and actors don't know what suits them.
In any case, I am more and more interested in current articles about decluttering so I try not to buy too much. I haven't been to check out the sales this year either.

Oh, I am too. I confess I did hit a couple of sales, as I NEEDED new boots (mine were cracked and could not be repaired). As you know, we need boots that are slush-proof as well as warm. I did also buy a new bra and a thermal top, both 50% off (and I know the usual prices; some sales are phony of course). Just utilitarian stuff.
Last year I bought a few new jeans/trousers as I'd lost weight, but they were slashed in price at the end of the season. I buy very plain, classic things.
I agree about decluttering, and I am anything but fond of clothes shopping. The stuff just seems to multiply. I've decluttered a lot, but it is far from done.

Gawd.
Who would think the day would arrive that Lady Gaga would consistently be one of the classier people on the red carpet?
As far as most of the grotesquerie featured, I can only say this and don't care if it makes me sound old and prissy: women who want to be taken seriously should not be wearing borderline bondage garments that scream "look at my tits".

I'm still trying to figure out Nicole Kidman's lower regions.
Edited to say that I finally figured it out -- the back of her dress flaring out.

So, here was the red carpet in France this year. I am not aware that there was any recommendation to wear black, but that was clearly the colour of choice.

Teeny pictures grrrr. Slideshow grrrrrr.
Nothing really earth-shaking, but very little of the amazingly ugly vulgarity that is sometimes seen on the red carpet either.
I very much like Audrey Fleurot in that green gown, which is outstanding with her red hair. Also, Sara Giraudeau looks immensely classy in that white outfit, which she pulls off with great poise.

Re: dress color
The best actress Academy Award was won most often by women wearing a gold dress (42% of nominees wearing gold won, vs 20% neutral odds), and the least winning color was green, worn by Kate Winslet when she DIDN’T win for Titanic.
Perhaps the paucity of green gowns has something to do with that statistic, and perhaps the paucity of green gowns is due to the tradition of not wearing green in theatre due to poisonings resulting from the green dye.
(“Some say the superstition came from Carl Scheele, a Swedish chemist who experimented with arsenic to create a shade of green (known as Scheele's Green) for wallpaper and fabric. While the chemist knew arsenic was toxic, he figured it was harmless when used for something that wasn't to be ingested. However, when the fabric got damp, it would give off a poisonous gas that caused many to become ill and some die. ”)

Traditionally, green is the unlucky colour for the acting profession in France because that is the colour Molière was wearing when he died.

Well the woman in green won (Olivia Coleman) and the woman in gold lost (Glenn Close).
So much for THAT theory!

What got me was how long so many of the gowns were. They certainly won't have to pay anybody to sweep the floor before they use the auditorium again.

I had a look at the French ones above in Kerouac's post and compared with the US ones of the Oscars on the BBC. The French definitely looked better because less outlandish and overdone. What's with the guy with the tuxedo-dress? Makes me think of drag queens who exaggerate the female side.
I don't mind pink, it's flattering to lots of skin and hair colour.

At least some of the French/Belgian actresses allow themselves to wear short dresses. This is apparently a no-no at the Oscars.

Why does it look like at least half of the heads were poorly photoshopped on to the bodies?

I like pink, it's the dresses which are hideous and their pinkness makes their awfulness stand out more. Horrible as the four I showed are, Maya Rudolph and her dress couldn't have looked worse if they tried. (see pic below) Some truly hideous dresses this year Thanks, Lugg ~ your link captured the most hideous of a horrible lot. It also yielded another death-by-ruffles pink monstrosity, the one worn by Linda Cardellini ~ Billy Porter looks like a pathetic attention-seeking moron in that dress. I have to say that I really liked the way Amy Poehler looked in her tux. Why does it look like at least half of the heads were poorly photoshopped on to the bodies? I have wondered about that before. Someone told me it's because most of those pictures are taken from far away and at odd angles.

Less is more. Simple, elegant and understated wins over flounces and too much exposed flesh every time.

I don't mind pink, but that "dress" made of ruffles would be horrible in any colour.

There are many shades of pink and rose. The one shown is definitely the My Little Pony and other plastic crap for girls shade.
And I much prefer the clothing at the French awards.
