And yes, I know that is not the pc response.

Me either. But isn’t it delicious having a space where we can speak freely without the PC police jumping down our throats?

Well, yes of course. But then the attendees at a Trump rally probably feel the same way.

Why don't you start a fashion thread?

Post by Kimby on Jul 25, 2023 13:47:42 GMT
I wouldn’t be able to properly moderate a fashion thread.
Plus isn’t “fashion” what the red carpet is all about? We’re in the midst of a long dry spell between award shows, so I thought followers of this thread might enjoy a preview of what we can look forward to next spring.

Would you like me to change the name of the thread to include both?
(I don't think that anybody has been "moderating" this thread.)

Thanks, Kerouac. That is a reasonable solution. However, since the red carpet thread is already 22 pages long & essentially an outlet for a specific type of event, I've created a fashion thread over in Waterfront Park.
I'll moderate by moving Kimby's link & comments over to the dedicated fashion thread.

Can I also put my Kate Middleton fashion faves there? Or will you feel the need to move them to the Royals thread? 😉

A summation of red carpet dresses from many events over the years. (I hope this is allowed, since it’s a long time till the next awards show.) Most are not “outrageous”, though “deeply plunging” and “ultra high slit” are (over)used in the breathless descriptions of each gown. Cara Delevingne’s look is unique. Reminds of “Goldfinger”…. (Heidi Klum’s dress is an accident waiting to happen.) www.kueez.com/en/shocked-outrageous-public

Most of the first bunch were just tacky, tacky, tacky. Why do they need breast enhancements and then letting it all hang out? The clothes on the later part of the pics were a little better.

Honestly..I dont get the need to have so much flesh on show. They're not porn stars (I don't think). I know that it's done to attract attention for work, but really it's quite unnecessary and degrading. A low neckline is fine as is a discrete side slit in the skirt..but half of these dresses are just gauze and sparkles.
It's not just my age...or jealousy. Even if I was slim and gorgeous I wouldn't wear these horrid things...they look so uncomfortable (no pockets either!)
Even the quite modest dresses look structurally restricting...one has to be able to walk...sit...breathe...

I know that it's done to attract attention for work, but really it's quite unnecessary and degrading. That was an exhausting and depressing "fashion" parade. Cannot add to what Bjd say, although I might say trashy, trashy, trashy instead. Cheery hits the nail on the head about it being degrading. Towards the end there is a photograph of Penelope Cruz at the 2008 Cannes Festival wearing a rather plain white gown. She is doing what she was there for: being a movie star looking appropriately attractive and elegantly dressed. The rest of those bimbos need to follow that lead instead of looking as though they're auditioning for jobs a wet nurses.

It’s like the Emperor’s new clothes, though in this case it’s actresses who are being misguided by the fashion designers, who in many cases are (dare I say this?) gay men, who probably don’t know or care what cis-gendered men and women find appealing.
Red carpets are not about the actors/actresses. It’s a showcase for designers with a wider audience than the usual fashion runways.

You mean you're not in admiration of Billie Eilish for being allowed outdoors wearing that?

It's all so dreadful. I'm having trouble working up a decent head of snark. Agree about Haile Steinfeld, also that color is gorgeous. The train seems more than unnecessary, as though the designer looked at the dress and said, "Oh, this is nice! How can I make it stupid?" Natalie Portman's dress is pretty. Call me a prude, a fuddy-dud, whatever you wish, but I feel utter contempt for these women who are there supposedly because their talent is being showcased, yet feel the need to play peek-a-boo with their breasts and do the moronic thing of exposing one leg. Also, wear clothes that fit! At least half of the anyporters reading this have breasts & know how garments look and feel when they don't fit. Even Hannah Waddingham, who is about as fit as can be looks as though one of her boobs is trying to escape out of desperation. Shouldn't all that kind of vulgarity have passed away by now. And while I'm on a roll, let me say again that formal clothes and high heels call for -- will always call for -- hosiery. Those naked, veiny feet bulging over the top of stilettos just look tacky. And men -- put a shirt on. All of you baring your chests under wide tuxedo collars just look like simpering idiots. Edited to add ~~ lucky me. When I went to click off the tab with the red carpet, the preview of the page had a headline about Gillian Anderson's dress. I had looked at that creation and though she looked like mutton dressed as lamb. I also wondered why it wasn't hemmed and what she was going to gather with her little basket. Well, lo & behold, the dress has a message. It features what People magazine calls vaginas, presumably because they don't know the difference between those and pudenda.

Why do they bother showing all the men in black tuxedos? They all look the same. I won't mention the women's dresses except for #44 who looks as though her dress was hung up with the shoulder straps and she was sort of stuck into it. And the very last one -- gives me the creeps with the lizardy-looking outfit.
And sorry for being un-PC but that short fat black woman called UnDivine (or something) looks like hell. If you are built like that, you don't emphasize anything.
In general, these are not as bad as the Grammy Awards, which is where Billie Eilish belongs. Or maybe in a dark cupboard somewhere?

I think they show the 'ordinary' men because they know that women are evil and will want to criticise every extra kilo or wrinkle or grey hair that they can spot.

That must be the reason. Unless they need to put in some photos of boring men just to tone things down.

Do women want to be objectified as sexual objects or not? And if not, why do famous and rich women who can wear anything they want habitually and obviously dress as sexual objects?
Don't get me wrong, people should feel free to wear (almost) whatever they prefer but why the obvious incoherency?

I did like the bottom of Natalie Portman's gown, I thought it could have been inspired by a painting by Gustav Klimt, but I thought the bodice was a little underwhelming.

Not seen most of them yet but of course the news today featured lots of pics of Taylor Swift - I do think her dress is gorgeous...love the green and the sheen.
I also admired Bella Ramsey's refusal to go down either road -froth or Eilish type , probably because I just admire her so much as an actress.

Florence Pugh's dress suits her and is a pretty, floaty thing (the dress, not necessarily the actress)...and that gold number is quite interesting, suits the actress imo. I don't know who most of these people are....

The Emmys red carpet ~ Sarah Snook Simona Tabasco That is the list of people who looked really, really good. Honorable mention: Ayo Edebiri Special mention for Issa Rae, who looked fantastic in that gold column she wore on Oscar night and somehow managed to carry off the feathery confection she wore tonight. Marin Hinkle looked good and I loved the color, cut, & texture of her dress -- a dress tragically ruined by that idiotic leg slit thing. www.vogue.com/slideshow/emmys-2024-red-carpet-live-see-every-look-dress-and-outfit-now

I just looked at them on the BBC website where there are fewer than in the Vogue article. I wasn't particularly impressed and I don't know who any of these people are. Most striking is Laverne Cox wearing a garbage bag.
