Maybe Julia Stiles picked gun-metal gray because she's nominated for "Silver Linings Playbook" (get the connection?) but wouldn't this dress have been lots prettier in another color?

I have a 50 year old prom dress that looks a lot like this, except with sleeves.... (Or should that comment go on the Hoarding thread?)

Very restrained, for Kelly Osbourne. One of the few dresses I could imagine wearing. And you can't beat the color black for glamour.

I agree with you on Nina, it's a beautiful color, and the cut nicely accentuates her petite frame. And usually I hate cutouts, but hers are subtle and unobtrusive.
I like Julia Stiles look. Very roaring 20s, but without being over-the-top.

And usually I hate cutouts, but hers are subtle and unobtrusive. I didn't see that as cutouts, I saw it as a strip of different fabric. I don't like cutouts either. Or side boob shots, like Michelle Dockery's dress. Or "death-warmed-over" makeup...

Okay ~~ broken record time: First, as I've said before, I think the strapless dresses would look better if they were just a tad higher, i.e., if they looked as though they comfortably fitted the wearer, rather than being precariously glued to the bosom. The dress Kimby shows at #91 is a good example of that. It looks as though it is dragging her breasts down. Also, if it were slightly higher, the whole bodice would have looked longer and sleeker. Second, don't get & never will get the naked leg thing in a formal dress and with heels -- it just looks trashy. Third, it's a formal occasion. Upswept hair would look so much better & wouldn't fight with the neckline (or lack thereof) of the dress. (also, that long-locks-over-one-shoulder thing is so contrived & really too youthful for most of the women wearing it) ========================================= Re: #90, Julia Stiles ~~ I really, really like the dress, including the color, and it fits her beautifully. I do think it could have benefited from just the slightest touch of the bottom organdy(?) fabric right on the opening of the neckline -- sort of a very abbreviated fichu. It would have given a finishing touch that would be in keeping with the 20s or 30s feel of the gown. Again, hair up & off the neck would be prettier & some killer earrings would be great. I love Kelly Osborne's dress & the whole look except for that horrible hair color. The women who have some color in their faces, especially on their lips, look altogether better. Sigourney Weaver looks as though she forgot about the event, then ran next door to borrow something from a neighbor, but had no time to fix herself up. So many of the women wearing black shouldn't, as it makes them look pallid. Michelle Dockery is a case in point, although it looks as though she was going for a tacky Morticia look. Agree w/Kimby & NYCGirl about Nina Dobrev -- not crazy about the dress per se, but she looks wonderful and quite elegant. I don't know how someone as pretty as Nicole Kidman managed to look so awful, but she did. That hair for one thing, her always excessive pallor, and the pitiful (naked) leg thrust -- no glamour! Anne Hathaway looks like a modern Cinderella in that she appears to have cobbled the dress together from some stepsister discards. Kerry Washington looks absolutely fabulous -- beautiful gown, beautifully worn: Marion Cotillard makes me want to take back my first & third points above. She just glows -- beautiful! For the life of me, I can't figure any way that Julianne Moore could have looked worse! Jessica Paré might win ugliest dress color in a night full of ugly dress colors. Did the person who dressed Rose Byrne hate her? Did that person hate her more or less than the person who did the poor girl's hair? Mayim Bialik, so potentially pretty, but ........... I love the way Alfre Woodard looked, although again, hair off neck would be better.

Rhianna and Taylor Swift get my votes. Carly Rae Jepson and Carrie Underwood also did OK.
Some of the others I gotta wonder: what were they thinking?

Post by bixaorellana on Feb 12, 2013 7:09:02 GMT
They were thinking, "How slutty &/or tacky can I look?"
I hate those stupid cut-outs and all that fussy matching bandage effect on the bodice.
Carrie Underwood looked wonderful in that beautiful gown. If she'd done something with her oh-so-obvious bleached blonde hair, she might even have looked classy.
Rihanna looks like a real live Barbie. Beyonce was channeling 80s Joan Crawford. Allison Williams had a great dress -- too bad she didn't have time to do her hair. Faith Hill looks hard -- she could be playing a madam. Florence Welch: creature from the black lagoon. Jennifer Lopez looks idiotic. Were there no mirrors in the store where Adele bought her dress?

Well, I don't know who most of these people are (seems to be a refrain with me), but will just say that Jennifer Lopez continues to look like a tramp, as she always does. The woman has absolutely no taste or style. And Beyonce's bum is too big for that pantsuit. Adele sings well and just had a baby so that excuses her plumpness, but her dress is awful -- looks like the cover of an old sofa.

In the link it says "Beyonce pulled off the pantsuit", now the question is, would that be worth seeing ;D

Why is it that the youngest of them all, Taylor Swift, managed to dress more tastefully and beautifully than those with decades of fashion experience?

For the last segment Rhianna wore a cropped top that showed her midriff. It also showed the little paste-on things she wore under her breasts to give her some "lift." The "underside" view showed every time she moved, which was for most of the song.

I was not being catty, but merely pointing out a major wardrobe malfunction as observed.

What dark recess did Adele drag that discarded curtain out of

I have never seen Adele in such a hideous outfit. Hope she does better at the Oscars, where she stands a good chance of best song. Yes, Adele had slimmed down considerably from her début - without getting the obligatory anorexic look, she just looked in good shape. There are other styles that would better suit a new mum. She is usually strikingly lovely, but not there. Yep, J-Lo is still Jenny from the block... And alas, not in a good way. We will have very elderly people on the carpet this year, for Amour. But Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva are both very elegant. And a lovely young Congolese girl, Rachel Rwanza, for Rebelle. I don't remember any cute animals this year.

Thanks..altho I read the Guardian (we call it the Grauniad) quite often I always skip the Gossip/Celeb and Sport bits I suppose that there is no excuse not to just google these things...search engines rule... I was surprised by Adele's frock at the Grammy's...it was stunning material and the colours suited her...but I think she looks much better in the more classical, subtle outfits that she usually wears. She's young and allowed to make mistakes (altho presumably she has a stylist?) She still looks beautiful imo.... ..if I wore that frock I'd look like a well upholstered sofa.....

I suppose that there is no excuse not to just google these things...search engines rule... Enhhhh ~~ it's more fun to ask each other here, I think. I can google all on my lonesome, but often prefer the dialogue that asking questions sparks. I don't know who most of those celebs are, just look at the pictures and copy the names in order to apply my snark to their clothing choices.
