Oh my goodness...When we have been the lonely diners very occasionally my husband announces he has reserved the entire restaurant for just us! I believe him until the next couple enter the door!

India is celebrating Diwali, or celebration of the path of light. They light candles etc as was done for Rama when he came back (from war ?) Millenium(s) ago.

I think it may have been when Boss of Lanka kidnapped Rama's wife Sita. With the monkey god Hanoman, Rama rescues Sita and as Hanoman ran ahead with the news his tail caught on fire and he started spot fires throughout the city, destroying the Bad guy's kingdom.
From the Mahabharata ...VERY loosely translated and abridged. I don't do names over 4 syllables! It is my #1 ripping yarn.
No...Ramayana, not Mahabharata, but even more complicated story-line.

Absolutely delighted for you...I discovered these stories in my teens and "got lost" in them in mid 20s. I used to read some and retell others to my kids for bedtime stories, doing a touch of censorship if needed. I love the way all the characters are flawed and the humour that runs through life. Tell me about the book you have bought...who is in it?

You may not know that South Africa has one of the biggest Indian populations outside of India....(Just some useless information) So, that means since two days ago already the fireworks started, the dogs in the neighborhood are trembling, the cats flying off here and there, and I can't wait for tonight when it will look like a war zone here with rockets streaking across the sky only to explode in joyful noise.

We have Diwali somewhere in the Paris suburbs as a public event. I have never seen it in Paris because I think the Indian community splits the festivals to avoid too much competition -- Paris does Ganesh, which has unfortunately been cancelled for two years. In fact, I don't know if Diwali took place either. I usually see the posters for it but not this year.

Well it is totally unknown and unheard of in Belgium.
I am like you Questa, indian stories have retained a touch of humour and naivety that makes them so nice to read. I think you find it un Bolliwood too : the stories, even for adults, have a childish side that no longer exists here. Seem we prefer to add gore instead.

I did know that about S.Africa, but there is so much I don't know. That's why I'm so grateful that anyporters keep sharing knowledge about their home grounds and other places they know or discover. Questa & Whatagain ~ I posted this movie a long time ago on Anyport. Just looked, and was delighted to find that the full movie is still on youtube, but in much better resolution than before. It's wonderful! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sita_Sings_the_Blues

On this date in 1972 I cast my first ballot in a US presidential election for a genuinely good man, George McGovern, who lost in a landslide to incumbent Richard Nixon, who went on to shame himself and the country as Watergate was revealed.

That was the first and only election in which I ever voted in the United States. Although I could still vote if I wanted to, I have abstained from doing so because I do not pay taxes there and do not benefit from any services.

Countries have such different priorities. I saw that CNN and Sky News are celebrating Britney's freedom while in France it is a day of commemoration for the 6th anniversary of the Bataclan terrorist attacks.

Oops. Was meant to be in highlighting today and supposed to be complete. 13 nov is the date our neighbour Thibaut committed suicide, at 20-21. A very nice kid. Her mother is the Godmother of our last one. We love each of them in that family. Except the father. A moron. No. A man with no empathy, no sensibility. A guy like Trump. Brighter though.

On 18 November 1793, the Louvre museum was inaugurated, one year after the abolition of the monarchy. It was called the "Central Art Museum" and displayed the collections of the former king.

Who decides on these matters ? Is there a committee of sorts?
