What a clever, enjoyable, & informative way to feature those celebrations, Patrick ~ thanks. However did you manage to get to both of them? You must have driven like a maniac.

Good to know that you didn't get speeding tickets in your sporty sportscar.
Listening to the Shetland music, I was thinking how it sounds exactly like American square dance music, before realizing that of course it's the other way around.

It's Hiroshima day, as much as we would like to forget it and move on. Why would a civilised country decide to kill 200,000 civilians?

I'd like your take on what the alternative solution would have been. I'm sure you have a viable and reasonable idea.

If an atomic bomb solves all military problems, we should be using them in all sorts of other places, no? That would be very reasonable.

Avoided the question. I'll be more specific. How would you have ended the war with Japan.

The traditional way. Japan was already losing. It would have taken longer, but there would have been fewer deaths.

Horrible though it is, I suspect they wanted to see what would actually happen. And if they hadn’t, somebody else would, somewhere else, some other time and it could have been far worse.

Just now seeing this and finally realizing why the date has been bothering me all day. I've gone through the birthdays of everyone in my family, etc. & couldn't figure it out. So strange that I didn't see it mentioned in any news media.

The traditional way. Japan was already losing. It would have taken longer, but there would have been fewer deaths. Highly debatable. This was the traditional way - "The Operation Meetinghouse firebombing of Tokyo on the night of 9 March 1945 was the single deadliest air raid of World War II, greater than Dresden, Hamburg, Hiroshima, or Nagasaki as single events." "The figure of roughly 100,000 deaths, provided by Japanese and American authorities, both of whom may have had reasons of their own for minimizing the death toll, seems to be arguably low in light of population density, wind conditions, and survivors' accounts. There were a number of bombing raids on Tokyo, just two raids killed more than both atomic bombs. That's the traditional way. December 1946 article regarding if nuclear weapons should have been used. Fresher memories then and first hand info - www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1946/12/if-the-atomic-bomb-had-not-been-used/376238/"About a week after V-J Day, I was one of a small group of scientists and engineers interrogating an intelligent, well-informed Japanese Army officer in Yokohama." "He replied: "We would have kept on fighting until all Japanese were killed, but we would not have been defeated," "There was every reason to think that the Japanese would defend their homeland with even greater fanaticism than when they fought to the death on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. No American soldier who survived the bloody struggles on these islands has much sympathy with the view that battle with the Japanese was over as soon as it was clear that their ultimate situation was hopeless." "The bulk of the Japanese people did not consider themselves beaten; in fact they believed they were winning in spite of the terrible punishment they had taken." But we'll never know.

The atomic bombs also saved the lives of the countless Allied soldiers which would have been lost had we invaded Japan. I have no sympathy with the Japanese in view of the barbaric way in which they treated prisoners

Mansplaining is always delightful. Pot calling the kettle black. And a way to avoid defending your untenable position. Mansplaining - "....a pejorative term meaning "to comment on or explain something to a woman in a condescending, overconfident, and often inaccurate or oversimplified manner". Or is it you see I'm mansplaining what mansplaining is? You need to pick a more suitable insult. I'm always willing to be persuaded with logical reasoning and authentic sources and don't shy away from admitting if I'm wrong. Maybe we should have an expert WWII historian on the forum. Hang on a minute.......

You made two statements K2. My apologies for refuting them in such a way that was too complicated for you to follow and found useless. I am aware of your short reading span but you are not the only member on here nor hold the position of the most important and thus all answers are to bow down to your preference. Maybe it is you who has the problem and not I nor us. Maybe you should stick with Tik Tok.

You don't have to apologise for refuting things that I say. Your words just bounce off me, as you know. That's why you have moved on to personal insults, but that won't work either. You really need to come out on top, don't you? But on top of what?

It seems that when you accused me of mansplaining and useless pedantry, before my post, you didn't consider them as insults. That's a new one on me. Yet in my reply to those, you now accuse me of personal insults as though it came out of the blue. I think you have the chronological order the wrong way round and seem to be blind to your previous two insults. Tell me why you are such a special person that you feel you can insult at will and make sure you play the victim when you get some of it back?
You feel my MO is pedantry. I know your MO for years is (not so) cleverly disguised snide insults from your lofty garret. You dish it out, indeed twice, and from me you'll always get it back. Why should I put up with it? There is a line between teasing and insulting. You far too often go over that as though it is acceptable. I am only "telling the truth" as you are fond of saying you do.

"The gentleman doth protest too much, methinks" so you can start revving up your atomic pride. Never said I was proud of it. Spurious inference. Mark needs to win or he won't be able to sleep tonight. You see it as a competition. I see it as you twice insulting me and me telling you to get off your high horse. I don't give a flying fuck about "winning".
