Hey, I like Whatagain's posts! Not only does he generally have something worthwhile to say, but reading some of them makes me feel like I've done well on one of those tests that announce "If you can read this, you are one of the 3% of the population with exceptionally high IQ".

I love Whatie's posts too. His use of English is poetical and often he chooses a word or phrase that fits the situation far better than mere "correct usage" would have.

Hearing her singing "Blue birds over, the white cliffs of Dover", moistened my eyes. My father was stationed there at that time flying barrage balloons off a barge in Dover harbour, and told us how he had three shot off his barge in one day. We could see these balloons from home, and watch the bloody Germans shooting them down. We really need that spirit now, not bog roll hoarders.

But may she live to become a spry Vera Lynn so that she can visit your grave in 40 or 50 years.

Wow. Perfect choice, Patrick ~ thank you! As Mossie said, We really need that spirit now, not bog roll hoarders. Your choice is great, too, Kerouac. It rather brought a tear to my eye. A very happy birthday to Mrs. Whatagain!

We had a nice birthday for my wife. We made a couscous with a chicken. Quite good. Another forgotten bottle ic Listrac Medoc this time. From 1998. Not bad but not great. The couscous was a teamwork of my daughters and i. We invited the in law but since we are confined could not drive her back home so she is still here. 😤😤

This is the 25th anniversary of the Schengen open border agreement. Unfortunately just about all of those borders are currently closed.
Although it was not part of Schengen, one of the only borders currently open is between Calais and England. If it closed, the UK would probably starve to death unless they started eating all of those fish they claimed they wanted. So much for self sufficiency.

Nancy Pelosi turns 80 today! What a vigorous and mentally sharp octogenarian she is.
And when Trump and Pence both are stricken with COVID in a few days, perhaps she will get to enjoy being the first female President of the United States. Wouldn’t that be delicious?

Will it even survive this? From what I can see they can't agree between themselves as to what action to take. Deferred for 2 weeks.

Bixa, is it more than knowing/understanding the 'pulling up trees' comment? It means making a strong effort - in this case means going all out for the EU to have a common policy for dealing with the virus.

Each country in the EU has its own health policy as those are individual sovereign issues. People in the UK should still remember details like that because they were members not so long ago, and that independence was probably one of the details about which they had no complaints -- besides loving the fact that they still had health coverage when visiting the EU.
Now that they are not members of the club anymore, it's a bit late to start making remarks about how things should be done.

I had no idea what the 'pulling up trees' comment meant either. Then again, I often am mystified by slangy British answers to clues when I do the Guardian crossword puzzle.

it's a bit late to start making remarks about how things should be done. Never stopped anyone before. You always seem to make judgements/comments on the decision to leave the EU as though you were personally invested in the outcome. It's a bit late to be making remarks about how things should have been done. Hah!

Dont trust a Brit. Never forget Mers El Kebir and Jeanne d Arc. And Fachoda. But do keep in mind Waterloo when they kicked out the french tyranny. And Charleroi where they got a bleeding nose covering our troops. Anyway dont shake hands with a Brit he might have Covid ...

Each country in the EU has its own health policy as those are individual sovereign issues. Doesn't the fact that all the EU borders are closed render common policy conversation or individual state health policy moot for the moment? Nine EU states closed their borders on March 16 and on on March 17 the EU closed all Schengen borders for a minimum of thirty days. euobserver.com/coronavirus/147742www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/breaking-eu-decides-to-close-all-schengen-borders-for-30-days/Hee hee ~ good answer, Whatagain!

Well, they are still discussing a common solution to the Covid crisis but unfortunately haven't come to an agreement. Meanwhile, 2 French patients were airlifted to a hospital in Germany today.

France has sent patients to Germany, Luxembourg and Switzerland -- in addition to all of the patients sent from 'Grand Est' to other parts of France. Even without being a member of the EU, Switzerland understands solidarity since it is completely surrounded by the EU.
