This is the song I put on when I need motivation to wash dishes, followed by Aretha singing Say a little prayer for you.
I thought Joe Dassin's outfit in that video looked timeless except for the giant belt buckle, but I am told that the shawl collar, the big single button on the jacket, the lacey shirt cuffs, and the cut of the jacket are dated. Just shows what I know.

Not a great Joe Dassin fan either, but Radio-Canada had a commemoration a couple of days ago, including this, about an ex in Québec (City). Note, in modern history, that port has never been locked due to ice for six months, and of course it is less nowadays. Still, that lovely city centre is far more chilly than Montréal. www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=joe+dassin+%C3%A9milie

Today is the anniversary of the "I Have a Dream" speech by Martin Luther King in 1963. The question is now whether it will be forgotten after President Trump's stirring acceptance speech for the RNC yesterday.

Today would have been the Indian Ganesha procession in Paris if covid-19 had not decided otherwise.

Today would have been the Indian Ganesha procession in Paris if covid-19 had not decided otherwise. What a fun, colorful, and visually appealing event! I was fortunate to attend last year and had hoped to repeat. Too bad it had to be cancelled, but the event sure had the potential to be a real virus spreader with its huge crowds.

What's going on with the stills? I can't imagine that Louisiana took prohibition much more seriously than Québec.

LaGatta, I chose that video not because of the slideshow, but because of the very old recording. The stills are just stupid in how random they are!

In commemoration, a restored B-25J bomber dubbed “Maid in the Shade” is visiting Missoula this week, offering tours and rides through Labor Day. The inside of the bomber bay door has been signed by veterans, many of whom have since died, including our own local Dolittle Raider who added his autograph in 2012, 4 years before he died. Soon there won’t be any WWII veterans left....

The Patrouille de France overflew Beirut today with plumes of red, green and white smoke to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the creation of Greater Lebanon. (But independence didn't happen until 1943.) France had the mandate for Lebanon and Syria while the United Kingdon had the mandate for Palestine and Iraq, thank you League of Nations...
Aren't we all glad that the world has become much simpler now that all problems have been solved?

The Kentucky Derby is being held today. Normally it would be the 1st weekend of April but was postponed. That and the Tour de France being held should give sports fans a boost. No word yet on the US Open normally held sometime a little bit later in September in NY.

I suspect this has been discussed elsewhere but September 11th 19 years on should not be forgotten. Of course any commemoration events are impacted by Covid

I utterly agree (I was terribly afraid about a friend who worked at a news service located there), but we must not forget the Chilean September 11th either, with the violent overthrow of Salvador Allende's democratically-elected socialist government in 1973, soon to be followed by similar coups in Uruguay and Argentina. (Brazil and Paraguay had been under the boot for a while).
My friend is ok, as is one of his closest friends who narrowly escaped the terror attack.

On this day in Germany it is a bank holiday but due to the aversion of being seen to be too nationalist, celebrations tend to be muted somewhat. This year in my area they seem to be non-existent. The weather is crap anyhow.

It's not nice to say such things, but I don't think I would have liked to see John Lennon at age 80. I imagine him as a naturalised American, probably supporting Trump.

I have no idea why you would say this and on what basis but, I've been confounded before by some of the things you have said on other matters and people.
