By the way, Der Spiegel also has an excellent English-language edition.

My Mum would have been 84 today. That is the 4th birthday I know of today Whatagain. 1- My husband's, 2 - a dear lady named Gina (my daughter was also Gina), that I met in Paris one trip and found out her birthday is also today. Unfortunately I saw on FB she passed away a few years ago. 3 - A staff member in our store, and now your mother Whatagain, On 27th would have been my fathers 102nd birthday. June is a busy month!

At least the building was old enough that they probably won't be able to blame the Chinese. If it were any newer and contained Chinese steel or concrete ingredients, I can only imagine what people would be saying.

Horrible situation. So far authorities have been unable to account for 99 people.

Sitting Bull took care of General Custer at Little Bighorn on this day in 1876.

A belated thank you to those who have congratulated me on reaching yet another birthday. I am afraid nowadays they only remind me of how useless I have become. I got a letter from my quack inviting me to phone in for another 'health check', out of courtesy I have agreed to the phone call where the initial bit is done, but after that I will refuse to attend for any blood test etc. My excuse is that I am too much of a coward because it hurts to have a bloody great needle rammed into me.

I'm getting to feel like that as well. Last session they took NINE little bottles of blood from the needle in my arm. I asked if they were going to give me a transfusion to replace what they were taking. She didn't reply...probably heard that one a hundred times before. I'm getting stroppy about all these tests. Now when the GP starts to order one I ask ,"What are you looking for?, what makes you think I have it? What is likely to happen if the test is positive?" Example...the Pharmacy check. Appt made for woman to come to my house and check my pill cupboard, dates on packages, remove rarely used stuff etc. Now I have been told I must make an appt with GP for "follow up" so she can go through the report from the check with me. Meanwhile the ambulances are 'ramping' at the hospitals for lack of staff. Oh, but it is so good to know my nasal spray is still in date! Ramping...Patient arrives at casualty in an ambulance, heart attack...no room in hospital so patient is treated in ambulance with ambos doing the treatment and hospital staff checking as the HOURS go by. Takes the vehicle off the road which reduces emergency responses. At times up to twenty+ ambos are ramping.

Congratulations, Mick and Mrs Cactus. Are you going to have a party?
Questa -- one of my sisters-in-law worked for a big pharmaceutical company. She claims that medicines don't really expire, they become slightly less effective over time after their expiry date. Not everything but many medicines.

Best wishes Mick & Mrs. M! Isn't it funny when the big day arrives you don't feel like sending up distress flares, having a 21 gun salute and all that fuss.... We didn't even remind our son that on 15 Dec last year we had been joined at the hip for 50 years. Just seemed a special day for the two of us - Unlike the fuss I made when my parents had their 50th. Hotel lunch for 30 people etc etc. My dad must had have hated it as he made an excuse to run off to attend to something important soon as pud was over... Have a wonderful little celebration and pat yourselves on the back. There aren't many of us around you know!!

Not everything but many medicines. Oh Yes! I have used various medications that have been ready to draw the pension...they were like Lily-the-Pink's medicinal compound..."efficacious in every case" I still have some "weapons grade" codeine based pain killers, only six left but I like knowing they are there, if needed.

You people are always eating when you could have taken a hot air balloon ride, a diving encounter with sharks or gone on the Sahara marathon.

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Cactus!!!! WOW!!! A major milestone indeed.
I just read that musician David Crosby is 80 years old today. He is still composing and performing.

I just read that musician David Crosby is 80 years old today. He is still composing and performing. And there was a recent documentary about him/with him called David Crosby: Remember My Name. Really good historical perspective including other musicians like Joni Mitchell, and the house that Our House was written about. Evidently there is bad blood between Crosby and his former band mates. He accepts it and accepts responsibility for it, but life goes on.

Thanks for that Kimby. There is an excellent documentary about all those musicians called Echo In The Canyon that covers much of that era. Interviews with the various musicians, lots of funny stories and covers of some of the major and some minor hits (some of which I really love) with younger musicians such as Jakob Dylan, Regina Spektor, Beck and others. It is treated with a certain amount of respect that people like us who grew up with that music can really appreciate. I can't recommend it enough.

Our library (and its networked libraries) don’t seem to have it, but maybe it’s new? Here’s the link for David Crosby: Remember my Name www.imdb.com/title/tt5884004/

A friend was recently telling me about the time his parents rented a house up Laurel Canyon in the late sixties and when they drove by there was often a hobo-looking guy surrounded by teenage girls who hung out at the store at the bottom of the canyon whom his parents warned him never to talk to. It was Jim Morrison.
