I recently was invited to attend a "wine tasting and dining event" at a local gastronomic restaurant.
It was marvellous!
I know the restaurant and its owners, so had no reservations about the food. The wine was provided by the (small) distributors of an independant vineyard in New Zealand.
Here is the menu: Canapés and Bellini upon arrival.
White Exmouth Crabmeat & Ginger Salad in St Clements Dressing Riesling and Sauvignon blanc
Roasted Monkfish with Rosemary and Garlic served in a tartlet of creamed leeks Chardonnay
Honey Roasted Pork tenderloin with apples and sage Pinot noir
Summer fruit & champagne Terrine with a vanilla bean ice cream and orange & thyme tuile Late harvest gewurtztraminer
Coffee (or tea/infusion) and home made petits fours.

Annie, that is probably the loveliest menu I ever read! It's informative, too, as reading the wines paired with the various dishes gives a good idea of what would work with what.
I would positively kill to try the that crabmeat salad and the monkfish dish.

Even though it sounds wonderful, I am uncomfortable in situations where one has to behave. Serve that at a picnic in a meadow or under a parasol on the beach, and I'll come running.

oh, the crabmeat salad was my reason to have rushed to the restaurant.
And K, this restaurant is magical. it serves delicious food, where absolutely everything has been made from scratch on the premises... but it is welcoming/friendly/comfortable.
Yes, there are real material tablecloths and napkins (rare in England), but the atmosphere is as far as possible from starchy.

How absolutely lovely and not anything overdone. Are the prices reasonable? It sounds like a place I would like to try on our next trip over.

Well, it IS michelin-recommended, Joanne. so not as affordable as it used to be, but the evening was GBP 55.00 all included - I believe this is totally reasonable. (out of my budget, but I saw this as a rare treat to myself)
There were home-baked bread buns with the starter and some potatoes and mixed vegetables steamed as a side to the main course.

That's sounds quite reasonable for an occasional treat. Very occasional. But we had lunch at the Jules Verne restaurant at the Eiffel Tower and it cost about $350 Cdn at the time for the two of us. It was our anniversary and some things one must do at least once.
So that restaurant sounds like a very nice treat indeed. We do tend to travel either at our birthday (we have the same birthday) in February or our anniversary in October. We're hoping to go back to the UK in late Sept 2011. Perhaps I'll be able to try it then.

I hope you will, Joanne! And I hope we maybe could meet for a coffee or something?
the restaurant is @angela's in Exeter. (angelasrestaurant) I haven't given you their full website address as they are about to change and make it much better than it currently is.

Annie, I just browsed their website & it looked really interesting. We'll definitely have to meet for coffee whenever we make it over to the South West.

I want the ginger and crabmeat salad - I tried to google St Clement's dressing and only got a couple of hits on menus, with no ingredients. Is it citrus?
Kerouac, much as I like al fresco and casual, I'm much more comfy at a table and chair - or picnic table - than eating sitting on the ground or beach. Ow, stiff knee. And spills...

lagatta, yes, I think they are kind of clementines. (judging by the name more than the taste) it was fresh and light and delicious.
