Cherry, I imagine that will frustrate many people, it's too bad it had to be divided up like that.

Well, besides that fact that it will rake in almost twice as much money that way, it was considered the wisest path to follow artistically. Part 1 is already about 2 1/2 hours long and yet those of us who have seen it know how many details were pared down. Part 2 is certainly just as long, and it is not really realistic to expect people to watch a movie for 5 hours.
What seems a little greedy to me is the announcement that the 3D version of part 1 will be (re)released to cinemas shortly before part 2 comes out (also in 3D) -- so even more money will be milked out of the franchise.

Well, I saw it yesterday. And I came away being quite disappointed. The scenes jumped from one frame to another without much continuation and the story line was crap to be honest. Still, some good acting by the three main characters, they have become better at their art as the years have past.
My kids enjoyed it more than me. I think that will be the last one I go and see personally.

I agree that unless one is quite familiar with the book, it is impossible to understand a lot of the jumping around from place to place. But if you know the book, the action is quite faithful.

The thing is, the Harry Potter books are written for children and I have yet to meet a child who hasn't enjoyed the books and/or the films - indeed most I know completely adore them. So from that point of view our adult sensibilites and expectations are irrelevant!
This 3D thing really winds me up - as far as I can see it's simply another technological advance which is being used to make vastly more money. Those 3D films I have seen it's just a novelty for the first few minutes and then you rarely even notice the effect.....I prefer to experience my film the traditional way and use my imagination - but I am not a techno fan at the best of times. I still think being able to use this machine and experience the Internet is marvellous..... ;D

They showed the first three parts between Christmas and New Year here and I watched all three. Then I realized they weren't going to show parts 4-6... I'll have to go and hunt them down on DVD.

You'll see him grow up really fast then. When you see how he looked in the first movie compared to the newest one with stubble on his chin, you realize that an entire generation has grown up with him at the same time.

I think they said the 3D version was being released for the big screen a few weeks before the final movie. But of course it is "retrofitted" 3D and was not really filmed in 3D.

As one who hasn't read ANY of the books, and only saw a couple of the early movies, can someone tell me which of the 7 or is it 8 HP movies are worth watching?

Well, one thing that I have found interesting is that they have become adult movies as the characters became adults. "Deathly Hallows Part I" was pretty much on the level of the major R-rated horror movies -- it escapes the rating because it is Harry Potter.

I am same as Kimby, apart from the fact that I am not going to run to the DVD rental. Apparently the first few books were really good but as the story goes on the quality declined - which I believe is somewhat the contrary to what happened to the films, maybe?

kimby - well personally while i am always disappointed (because one always expects more) i find them all worth watching - but i would say you need to read and like the books to enjoy the movies.
i just decided i am going to see the last one in 3d - i saw the first few in the theatre (but in german, as back then i went either with my mom, or friends who didn't like reading subtitles), after that i watched the next ones on dvd because i went to the movies rarely in the last years. part one, i only saw this spring on the airplane home (interestingly, at least in the area of india where i was, no one spoke of harry potter, and i don't think they showed it in the theatres in petta or pala - maybe they did in kochi or trivandrum, so i could have gone there if i really wanted to, but not sure) - but now i just realized i could start going to the movies more often again...
i don't really know if i think that the quality of the books declined - they changed, so i suppose some of the things that made the first few books charming got lost over time... but i still enjoyed the last ones a lot too...

On another website, I was reading about one of the most awful curses in the real world: there are numerous people whose real name is Harry Potter. Can you imagine having to live with that name?

Thoughts on the last movie? I thought it was really well done. It might even be my favorite of the series. A certain character-revealing moment for a key player was very poignant. And a minor character who has been in the entire series gets a couple of triumphant moments that make you want to cheer.

They were showing Harry Potter 1 on television last night and it was so odd to see the main characters again as tiny children. Instead of looking 11 years old, they looked like they were 6!

Frankly it would interest me, but my trips to London are always so short that there is never any way to fit in such a "trivial non priority." Of course, I should not be talking since I planned a special visit on purpose to Pierrefonds once because I knew it was a filming day for Merlin. Then again, I am already living in France. What impressed me were the Japanese and Australians who had travelled from the other side of the planet for the same thing.

I read the new short story, written in newspaper article form, and I have to admit, I was disappointed. I realize now that I don't want any "where are they now" updates. I'd rather just imagine the future lives of Harry Potter and his friends.
