Love that blue!
Is there a name for that kind of mixed stone & brickwork?

Not that I am aware of Bixa. In earlier days dressed stone was used to form edges to doorways and corners etc., but as brick became available and was cheaper than dressed stone then that took the place. The undressed stone was still cheaper so could continue until brick became cheap enough.

Is there a name for that kind of mixed stone & brickwork? I think it's just called Brick & Flint. Here's a couple of contrasting Parisian doors: My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

I think it's just called Brick & Flint. Thanks! Lovely and interesting doors. In the second one, you can see that there must be an interior door as well, with the outer one for providing security and ventilation. That blue with the wrought iron is very pleasing.

Yes, the usual thing is that there is a whole world behind such doors in Paris, as in other cities - there'll likely be a lobby or a passage through to an inner courtyard, with apartments in both the streetside building and in a building on the other side of the courtyard. The flat I stayed in in Paris had a security-coded front door and another inner gate to pass before you got to two separate sets of staircases. I've seen similar arrangements in Berlin and Amsterdam. Mossie those are glorious doors...are they all from the same building? I love the warm amber of the interior ones especially.
Patrick..I really like the contrast of the ornate metalwork against the (dare I say it) shabby wood of the doors...almost 'in my former life I was the door to a palace..'

The 'brick and flint' was used extensively in early houses in Australia but here it is blocks of sandstone and brick. As the soft sandstone weathered away easily the corners of the walls would be done in bricks. These places come on the market occasionally and are advertised as 'sandstone walls with brick quoins'
