What a bust this turned out to be!
IF it happened, it was the wee hours of the 16th, meaning Friday night after midnight.
The moon didn’t rise til 3am on Saturday night (actually the 17th). So maybe the smiley face happened after 2 am the night before.
And I heard it was gonna be upside down, in these parts, anyway...
Pfffbt!

The pictures looked very nice. I hope you weren't hoping for a frowny face. We don't need one up in the sky -- there are plenty at ground level.

At Mount Rushmore, there will already be a glowing orange ball up front.

I saw a strange-looking moon early this morning while skies were still dark. Reddish, very bright, and oblong shaped. I was half-asleep, so actually wondered if it really was the moon, or perhaps another planet plummeting our way.

I've never in my life seen a truly impressive comet. None that have been hyped—Kahoutek and even Hale-Bopp—impressed me much, though Hale-Bopp was OK.

I gave up on comets after the Halley's Comet debacle in 1986 after waiting my entire youth to be amazed by it after everything that had been written. And, shit, I am not writing its next appearance in 2061 on my agenda.

My favorite celestial event of the year is here: PERSEIDS meteor shower this week, peaking tonite and tomorrow. The moon rises very late, so the sky should be good and dark for viewing. ðŸŒ

I forgot to bring my sleeping bag to the lake, so I only watched for a short while. But I saw two really bright long-lasting (for a meteor) shooters last night, and went to bed happy.
Woke at 2 and went out to check the sky again, but the moon had already risen and the stars were washing out.
But tonite is another night...

I saw it! While walking with the dogs after sunset today, but well before dark, I saw the big perfect moon rising over the mountains. Just beautiful!

For two evenings in a row we were able to clearly witness the Saturn/Jupiter conjunction when it happened last week or more. It was odd looking, sort of like two lopsided blobs of light. Were I not aware of what was going on, I would have been rather alarmed due to how alien it looked.

Last night there was a huge meteorite fireball over the UK. I did not see it but heard the sonic boom it also emitted.
