That's excellent. I have never been anywhere where I could try that with my camera.
But wait... maybe at the end of the month I'll get a chance in the middle of nowhere.

I was outside last night looking for any sign of the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis that forecasters said was possible in Montana Tuesday or Wednesday night. Our sky looked a lot like Mark’s, the Milky Way was so prominent.
The moonrise is an hour later tonite, so should help with that, unlike the Perseids meteor shower late last week which was mostly washed out by the Sturgeon Super Moon.
I did see one really good shooter, though, a very bright, orange sizzler that streaked across half the sky. I’d say it was the 2nd best meteor I’ve ever seen.

Outstanding pics Mark. Thank you.
I really do miss being in a place where there is no light pollution to be able to see these celestial skies.

I must admit I have this every night when the moon is not up or no moon. We have a young lady visitor, a friend of my daughter in her early twenties who has never ever seen the Milky Way. Always lived in cities.

I don't think I've seen the Milky Way since I was about 12 years old. I hope to see it again some day.

Oh wait, I think I saw it in Mauritius around 1980. But on that trip what stunned me was to see the constellation Orion lying down almost on the horizon.

Tonite is supposed to be a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights at my latitude. Maybe yours, too.
Does anyone -tod2, questa? - know if Southern Lights occur when Northern Lights do?

Fab photos Mark There have been lot of photos posted in the UK of the Aurora which at times has been visible to a much larger part of the UK than normal. I follow one particular group - Glendale and have their app but hopefully some of you can see this from their fb pages www.facebook.com/GlendaleSkyeAuroras/

Just now seeing this. Thank you, Kimby, for staying on top of these celestial events in this thread! I'm still marveling at Mark's Milky Way pics at the top of the page!!

We got up at 4:15 and got to see the BLOOD MOON ECLIPSE as it was lowering in the sky above the Mississippi. STUNNING!!!

I am so jealous Casi! You certainly had a super duper Birthday Moon! Hope you had a lovely birthday and I wish you many more. You are just two days before mine and exactly 10 years younger.

That's amazing, Tod! I remember you were the same last year too.
The Southern Aurora doesn't come north enough most times, I've only seen the tail in the distance roughly 100km SE of Adelaide. Halley's Comet parked over my back yard for ages, but I was living in rural light free area then.

Happy for you, lugg. We’ve had cloudy skies and rain here on Sanibel. Plus a post-hurricane curfew from 9pm till 6 am. Not helpful.
However, the Geminids continue past their peak until Christmas Eve, and the moon is waning, too, which should help.

Comet watching is peaking this week. Unless you’re in the woods. And it’s cloudy. Sigh.
