We are surely going to have quite a bit of rain and the areas around Lake Borgne, Lake Catherine and St. Bernard Parish are very vulnerable.
We pulled out the sandbags and loaded with provisions.
One thing that really gets me and this will be the litmus test so to speak; the guy who bought the house across the street from us paved everything (violated every code imaginable), the backyard and a huge double wide driveway.
I pleaded with him to look at permeable concrete alternatives and even had a woman I know who heads up the Urban Conservancy go over there and talk to him. He was reported but likely paid a fine and got a slap on the wrist. We took pictures when he did it and told him he was likely going to be liable if we flood any more than what we normally would. We are on the low side of the street and have permission to park in someone's driveway on the other side. That being said, we shall see.
At least we have a mayor and a governor who so far, seem to be working well together.
I spoke with my friend M. in Miami Beach and she said they were fine.

Okay, Casimira. Here's hoping all is well, the electricity stays on, etc. We'll be waiting to hear the all clear from you.
Your neighbor is the very reason that older areas like yours often have strict codes not only for practicality, but to prevent ugliness. That driveway must be a glary nightmare all by itself and you know his air conditioning bill must be huge with all the heat he's surrounded himself with.

We've lost power here umpteen times this summer already. As for the guy across the street, he doesn't give a fuck and while there are codes, and a program called "the front yard initiative", there just aren't enough inspectors to enforce it. And, it really is ugly. He has tenants in the downstairs, the rent is $3,200 a month!!!!! The upstairs was just recently rented out to two young Tulane students whom I am sure Mommy and Daddy are footing the bill for. There are 3 SUV's in that f'n driveway.

SUVs are useful for driving through floodwaters.

Looks like they are starting to wait in line. I have been watching all of the Irma memorials, of course mostly concerning the aftermath at Saint Martin and Saint Barth. The kids went back to school in partially destroyed buildings (of course they are living in partially destroyed houses...). s19.postimg.cc/m0i58hxar/NHC_7_Sept.jpg

Yes, it's that time...
We didn't even bother to put the sandbags away.
And, whenever one of us makes a Walmart run we make a point of grabbing a case of bottled water and some canned goods.

And two more tropical storms building in the Atlantic, it seems. Fingers crossed they ALL stay out to sea.

Both the Gulf and the Atlantic are reported to have record warm temperatures.
Not a good potential scenario.

It appears that Florence is going to reek havoc along the Carolinas.
Then there's Helene and two other yet to be named tropical disturbances #8 and #9 that bear close watching.

Apart from looking like a psychedelic Van Gogh painting, this map does not bode well for many areas. It seems as if one hurricane misses you, the next one hits. Good luck and stay safe. At least you get warnings and can prepare...not like earthquakes.

Hard to prepare when you’re 2000 miles away, as we are from our Florida house. The next couple storms, though, seem to be on track to go someplace else.
Hopefully not the USVI, where my sisters and I have booked a vacation in December.
I don’t want to wish it on anyone, just for the storms to stay out to sea, please!

Last year President Macron visited Saint Martin after the 90% devastation by hurricane Irma, of which it was the one year anniversary last week. There were a lot of reports on the news showing that reconstruction is slow, with only about 40-50% of the buildings repaired so far. Of course, some of them are not supposed to be repaired because they were built without authorisation in the wrong places. Macron promised at the time that he would be back in one year to see how people were getting along, and that trip is planned for in about 10 days. I just hope he doesn't have to see any new destruction when he arrives.

I already forgot the origin but I found it much more aesthetic than the ones by the NHC.

Th latest report from the NHC has Florence being upgraded to a Category 5 by the time it makes landfall in a few days.
Projections still have it headed for the North and South Carolina border.
This is a very dangerous and deadly hurricane if this bodes true.
If I lived anywhere along this corridor I would be gone yesterday.

Please stay safe Huckle and thank you Questa for your well wishes.
I know so many people that live along this corridor and really do stress out every time these systems develop this time of year.
Mother Nature sure does take control and let's us know we are mere "guests".
My dear friend who leaves NOLA every year around this time to go to her family plot of cabins in the Southern part of North Carolina is heading back early to NOLA in order to try and avoid the potential threat she may encounter there in that neck of the woods.

That does sound ominous, Huckle, and "headache weather" besides. Is Isaac's Storm about about the 1900 Galveston storm? I knew a lady who lived through that.
Your friend has a long drive, Casimira, but running west sounds like the right thing to do.

I finally made contact with my two nieces, my former sister-in law, and several other friends along the path of this oh so devastating storm. I've been stressed out all day, trying to avoid watching the news by working out in the "jungle" but, the rain here, (unrelated to THE storm) kept driving me back inside and if I went online or turned on the radio or T. had the TV on it was all either news regarding the pending storm or 911 related. A very depressing day with not much hope of very good news in the following days.

I think it would be "tremendously" difficult for him to be as ineffective than "W" was in the aftermath of Katrina.
Hopefully FEMA is much more organized as well.

I just hope that he gets a chance to throw rolls of paper towels to the survivors, like in Puerto Rico. I'm surprised anybody needed them, given what a "tremendous" job Trump's administration did there.

He’s insisting that the response to Maria in Puerto Rico was the best ever....delusional.
But since there’s a lot of white people and a lot of GOP voters in the Carolinas, perhaps the response to this one will be a bit more robust.
