NYC is preparing to shut down transit due to the storm and fears of storm surge.

I wish the Washinhton, DC metro area would do the same. I read where they have taken precautions by shoring up certain sensitive places along the subway with sandbags. I would imagine much of the real danger to human life could be lessened by keeping people at home and off the roads.

In Hong Kong and Singapore, you have to climb a few steps up from pavement level to get into the subway. That is because the streets are regularly flooded during tropical storms and even just severe thunderstorms -- so the water doesn't get into the subway.

Part of the big concern in the Washington DC area (from my observations) is that many city workers transit by bus for several miles to metro stations. And then many of the metro tracks are above ground and susceptible to wind issues.
Many offices close once the federal government announces closures. So far the fed has made no such announcement, but one of the Virginia counties just announced school closures for Monday and Tuesday.

Mayor Bloomberg went under heavy criticism for doing the same during Hurricane Irene last year. The bottom line is, the mass population of Manhattan Island and it's boroughs has no mass evacuation route, save by foot. He may be a tad eccentric, OTT, but, safety in these matters vs. inconvenience is what matters most and he's taking care of business with regard to the best interest of the people. Best wishes to all who may be affected, be safe.

I hope that people are listening locally to ensure they keep abreast of any emergency information and instructions. Sometimes it seems that they go to extremes, but they are just trying to look out for every ones safety and all possibilities.
Wishing all our friends along the coast safety, warmth and power!
I also am waiting to hear if my husband got to Rochester, NY yet today.

Best wishes to your husband, mich. I hope he stays safe.
The federal government was shut down in Washington when an announcement was made at 6 tonight for non-essential workers to stay at home tomorrow. The metro buses where then canceled and now all Metro service has been suspended until further notice. I think it was a very smart move.

A full moon will dramatically affect rising tides. There's already reports of water breaking through barriers in Far Rockaway, L.I. Coney Island will likely be a wash.... It's a scary scary situation especially for coastal areas. NYC just reported water topping over walls as of a few minutes ago into Battery Park. And, this is just the beginning....
My brother's house sits right on Peconic Bay, and he is on low ground. He's been wanting to elevate his house for a long time in the event of such a storm. I'm sure he's been moving stuff out of there to higher ground inland as he did for Hurricane Irene last year. My mother's house high enough to likely not be affected by flood waters.

Thank you htmb. The training is scheduled to start this morning at the outdoor training area at their airport. Casi, sorry that it will be a long day for you waiting to hear how your mother and brother make out through this storm. I too live on the water but our lake does not flood, it will rise about a foot or two but the houses are up high enough that it is never an issue. Our dock has already been pulled out and is stored on shore for the winter. The lake on the other side of town has flooded homes along the water front many times through the years and is at the mercy of weather and dam control. One of the reasons we chose this lake to purchase a home.

I wish them well, Casi. It may be a tense few days.
When I was in Old Town Alexandria, VA in August it was during the full moon and I was surprised to see how high the Potomac River rose - up level with the top of the seawall - during normal weather.

It's looking right now that Atlantic City is going to get a direct hit. While this is a serious situation, I have two frivolous questions.
1. Can a new Chance card be added to the traditional Monopoly game? ("Hurricane Sandy strikes. Lose $200.")
2. Can Donald Trump's hairspray meet the challenge if he stands on the boardwalk?

I fail to find any humor, sarcasm, or the like, in this situation. I have family ,loved ones and personal property at stake here. This is no time for jokes! This is where anti-Americanism on the part of people like you Kerouac really offends.

So far, so good here. The rain and wind started to pick up during the early afternoon, as was expected, and right now it's raining lightly. I know this won't last. Tomorrow may be a different story altogether. Then and on Wednesday is when we'll see the worst of it. Be safe everyone who is or will be affected by Hurricane Sandy. (I wonder why they named such a bad storm with such a nice name?)

Just been watching some video footage from across the huge area that Sandy is affecting; it really brought it home to me how devastating this storm is.
Hope all affected AP's , and their friend's and family stay safe

I am really sorry that you misunderstand so completely. I'm sorry. I flew off the handle as I was very anxious and keyed up around this whole storm. Yesterday was 2 year anniversary of burying my mother and I got a wee anoxotic. Was very worried about loved ones and my family homestead being obliterated. I can appreciate 'black humor' as much as you. No hard feelings I assure you.

How is your family, Casimira? Have you received any reports?
This appears to be another storm that keeps on giving, unfortunately, as it continues to work it's way north.

I spoke with my brother early this a.m. He moved inland a bit with his GF and won't know the extent of damage of his property for a bit yet. He is safe. I spoke with some other friends who live on Long Beach, L.I. and their house got swacked. It's one of the towns you will see major coverage of on the internet.
Many of the other folks I know I haven't been been able to get a hold of yet.

I am hoping you are able to make contact with your family and friends soon Casi. I can understand how distressing it would be to not know how all your loved ones are coping during this storm and in the aftermath.

We lost our power last night around 12:30 a.m. until 8:30 this morning due to high winds. Thank goodness for the propane fireplace on the main floor that heated the house because it got really cold. We have had a little bit of rain/sleet but it is mostly the wind that seems to have reached us.
My husband is on his way home for NY now. I would think the storm has moved east so hopefully he has a safe and uneventful drive home. It is about a 7 hour drive.

Just received a text from my husband that he is about an hour and half away, hopefully he will be home by about 9:00 p.m.
They only had half a day today and let them get on their way home.
Last night during the hurricane my husband said it was absolutely miserable, the wind was blowing so hard the rain was hitting them sideways as they were up and down ladders out on the tarmac performing scenarios on aircraft fires. It was very dangerous and one of the trainers did get hurt, an ambulance had to be called to take him to the hospital.

I thought that hurricane season ended on October 31st, but I just checked and it continues in the Atlantic until November 30th.
