22° this morning and the forecast is for 27°, so we might get a bit warmer than that, but the heat seems to be moving north and east.

It is freezing in south oz...literally! For the last few days there has been snow in the Flinders Ranges and in the Adelaide Hills the temp at dawn yesterday was minus 12.7 C We often get flurries of snow in the Hills but the Flinders is 'red dirt' country and it is covered over now with white for many kilometres. Both my hands are swollen with chilblains...rare in this city, anybody have any remedies?

My air conditioner has been churning away in the upstairs room for several days. It is a godsend, because when I go downstairs the temperature in the rest of the flat is 31°. It is a shame there is no way to block off the stairs because obviously the heat keeps surging upwards. If I had a way to block it, I would 1) probably freeze to death 2) save very much money on my electric bill.

Could you arrange something across the opening like a large sheet of plastic? It might be a pain, but I bet you could figure something out if you tried.

It's 32° here outside right now but it has clouded over so I'm hoping the forecast thunderstorms actually come.
We have a heat pump that blows hot air in winter and can air condition in summer but we rarely use it. It's 26° in the house so we just put on the dehumidifier and that will take the temperature down a few degrees.

We got just a little bit of a thunderstorm in the last hour, but I am not convinced yet. Keep trying!

I feel for you Kerouac. Air-conditioning as you know has to be localised for the sake of the aircondioner unit so it's thermostat can turn off and on, off and on….. I have been chastised by the Aircon man that comes once a year to service my air conditioners for having the setting on the lowest possible. He shakes his head and gives me a dirty look. As for your problem - I would get the aircon people to have a look and they might just tell you what others have done. Do you clean your own filters? So many units never have their filter washed and it makes a huge difference to the performance. It's such a simple process. I think your answer is to put another unit downstairs. Trying to make the upstairs cool lower down would be too much for its brain.

We’re going to look into the cost if AC for our little place. There’s going to be more weather like this in the future.

If you can afford it, there is no need to suffer, Mick. Even cooling one room is wonderful.

Ironically, it's even worse outside when people have air conditioning inside. I remember walking around in New York City in August where all the stores were air conditioned and the hot air was blasting on to the sidewalks out of vents, and all the cars with their windows rolled up and their motors running so the a/c would work.

If you decide not to get AC, Mick, think about getting ceiling fans. Not only do they keep rooms from feeling stuffy, they can flush the hot air out in no time if you've been out and come home to a hot house.

I love having ceiling fans and hope to never live without them, but my favorite fan to have "back in the day" was a whole-house ceiling fan that sucked fresh air into the house and emptied hot air out through the attic. I loved using those fans, but haven’t lived in a house with one in twenty-five years.

I grew up in a house with an attic fan and I loved it. My brother not so much because he had his finger on the doorframe one day when the fan came on and when the door was sucked shut it cut off his finger.
We had a pathetic little shower last night. They're promising the real stuff tomorrow.

The climate in Pietermaritzburg is such that one has to have air-conditioning in at least one room you occupy the most, and underfloor heating he same. I am such a lucky person to have had the finance to do the whole main house floors when we retiled, but added the aircon room by room starting with our bedroom and gradually the other rooms, dining room and lounges and my study have a very large unit that ducts the air to where its needed. As you can see Mick from your temps, it would be terrible to have those high figures for at least 4-6 months of the year! Get a small unit for the bedroom. sleeping in comfort is a good start.

35°C here yesterday and very humid. It was difficult to move about much as everything made one sweat...horrid.
We used to have a ceiling fan but Jeff moved it to son's room when we got the A/C tbh I preferred the ceiling fan...but dont tell Jeff. The A/C is less noisy than it was because Jeff but the unit in the box room and we have the the fan pipe fed through the wall...I'll have to take a pic because it works really well...

Box bedroom aka walk in wardrobe/dump stuff that doesnt fit elsewhere room Jeff took out the double glazed unit and had a smaller one made so that he could fit the pipe attachment in the bottom of the window. We still have the bigger unit and can replace it in the winter. The air comes in via this hole in the wall...the clear plastic shield stopped it hitting me square on as I was getting a sore shoulder (cant move the bed as it takes up most of the room) . When not in use the little white piece of wood slots in the wall to hide the hole. The past few nights the little A/C has allowed us to sleep quite comfortably...but I'd still rather have the ceiling fan back.

It is still 30C here and still humid so I have definitely had enough of this weather, I suppose it is still a few degrees below recent days. Hopefully it should cool a bit more tomorrow and we may even get a shower, I heard some thunder a little while ago but looking at the weather radar page it has passed us by and receding into the distance, blast it.
