It is hard to tell. Just as we think we have done really well and will probably win, something...weather, a couple of excellent catches, some dogged batting and oops..we have slipped back again. The current match is being played in my city and today I met a nurse-friend and showed her around, while her husband went to the match. My city was full of UK people who have flown in to watch the series.

Adelaide is the most beautiful Test ground I have been too (mind you that was in the'70's so probably changed since then).

Adelaide is the most beautiful Test ground I have been too (mind you that was in the'70's so probably changed since then). I am happy to tell you it is even better now. Still has trees. gardens and cathedral on north side with river, lawns and new bridges on the west. Google Adelaide Cricket Oval and take the tour

At least it will go to a 5th day! Writing this on Wed before play starts, it looks to me like your mob should be able to hold out. It has been an eventful match, Apparently it is over 100 years since the winner of the toss has sent the other team in...and won! Should Smith have enforced the follow-on? Why did Oz seem to lose concentration? Today they are allowing spectators to enter for a gold coin donation ($2)...yesterday it was $100 to enter.
**Questa scampers off to do chores so she can sit and watch it on TV this afternoon**

That's true, but it still was an entertaining match even if it wasn't one of Adelaide's cliff-hangers. England has some young talent to watch.

It’s all yours Questa.
Steve Smith may not be pretty but he’s very effective.

Smith is magic at the moment...one of the players that seem to thrive under pressure... And to think they were going to leave Mitch Marsh out of the team! Only picked because they needed an extra bowler. This is the last match to be played on the WACA grounds as a new stadium (ugh)is opening soon. It is also Marsh's home ground so all his friends and rellies came to cheer him on. He has had a golden day and remains 181 n.o. at stumps. The look on his face when he made his 1st ton was marvellous.

I’m afraid we have been found wanting on this tour.
Yes, the new stadium doesn’t seem that popular. I didn’t got to the WACA when I was there unfortunately but I really loved Perth as a city but it was seriously hot. We shared the plane with Count Basie and his band who were touring at that time.
Happy days!

I associate 'stadium' with blood sports, not the civilised game of cricket.
In the Lillee and Thomson years the WACA ground had a pitch like concrete...very fast and hard. Teams coming to Oz had to start their tours in WA with a couple of warm-up games there. I remember seeing the demoralising effect the pitch and bowlers had on players. Recent years have seen drop-in pitches and re turfing reduce the terrors of the batsmen.

Cheer up, your chaps, as everyone knows, still have some good opportunities to take out the Melbourne Test and that is the test of passion. The crowds there know and love their cricket and if your lot can put up a decent performance the MCG crowd will show their appreciation.

The cracks were so big you could have hidden a small child in one! Did you see the curator thumping away with the top of a sledge hammer, trying to even the ground? Sydney will be better I hope. England played much better this time and there was lots of action worth the entrance fee...from both sides. Pity about the rain...what do you think would have happened if it had stayed dry?

I thought that the English team improved tremendously in the 4th test....not that I got to watch much of it. It would have been nice if they could have won...but that Mr Smith is a marvel.

He is pretty cool, isn't he? Nice bloke as well. He just missed out on setting a new record, but is running second to Don Bradman in quickest to get to 3000 runs.

The ICC have rated the MCG pitch as "poor".

Sydney is well known for a pitch that favours slower bowlers. Like most of NSW...devious!

Just out of curiosity, is cricket played when conditions are snowy? (Not that that applies at the moment anywhere I know of in cricketland.)

Snow stopped play one June at a match in Derbyshire.

As it’s played in summer it’s unlikely although I have played in snow in early spring. That would explain why the distant cousin known as baseball is also only played in the spring and summer. But baseball never spread to tropical places, so the season really ends in October (?).

As far as I am concerned, those are the subtropics at most, and Mexico is part of North America. There is nothing professional near the equator or anywhere in the southern hemisphere. And in any case, the United States only plays with itself.
"World" Series, anyone?

I have seen First class cricket played in torrential rain where the cameras could just see the players. The umpires "offered the light" ie asked the batsmen if they wanted to leave the field as the ball was hard to see (and dangerous) IIRC it was the Chapell brothers in UK and they had to face 12 balls to get under 10 runs so they went for it...and won the match. If there is lightning everyone must leave the field.
