The cricket World Cup is ongoing in the UK at present. Today it is India v Pakistan at Old Trafford cricket ground. There are 36,000 tickets available and all sold. 800,000 people applied for them. The worldwide TV audience is estimated at a billion and a half.

Many people underestimate the huge global audience of cricket. Obviously, the former Raj includes a huge number of players and supporters, as do the BWI countries. Are there any global regions not once painted pink on the globe that are significant sides or supporters?
A park near me (Parc Jarry) has cricket matches sometimes. Most of the fellows in their crisp whites are South Asians. In other areas there are many cricketers from the BWI countries. Hereabouts, most Caribbeans are from the French (Haiti, and the French islands) and Spanish Caribbean who watch with interest but don't often participate.
I presume England and the Celtic fringe nations have separate sides?

I was pleasantly surprised to find Afghanistan has an International team. Their first wicket in Int'l cricket was at Adelaide and the crowd of Afghani supporters went hysterical.

Even I saw that South Africa was eliminated.
Cricket is the Afghan national sport, if I am not mistaken. I saw Afghan refugees playing cricket in a park in Calais last year.

Travelling through India, Pakistan and strangely Nepal, you can see wrecked buildings with a cleared area in front and the 3 stumps of a wicket painted on the front wall. Great for precision bowling practice, but slips missed out. They all took it seriously...this could be their ticket out of the rubble.

The World Cup is coming to a conclusion with the last 4 being England, India, Australia and New Zealand. The final is next Sunday at Lords.
Grandson George is on the short list to be called to Lords on Saturday as practice bowler to the finalists.

I hope George has an exciting time but I don't want the Poms to win the Cup. Three Aussies made a stupid and unsportsmanlike decision. They were given a harsh penalty, which they have paid. The behaviour of the England supporters is out of order, they are now the unsportsmanlike element, especially the senior players who have done nothing to tell the fans to get over it. If the England Skipper can't shake hands with his opponent...send him off.
Me being cranky! not at you, though.

I believe there is a story about a gentleman member at Lords watching a cliff edge finish to an important match who became so excited that he bit right through his umbrella handle. I think this latest match there would rate about 10 umbrella handles, don't you?

It was the sort of game that even non cricket enthusiasts (e.g. Mrs Cactus) couldn’t take their eyes off it.

I was watching Wimbledon (not by personal choice it should be said). Even I got sucked in to the exciting match between 2 gladiators... I would rather have watched the cricket.

I cant help but wonder how Ben Stokes is feeling given his country of birth is NZ

It is all in the timing, Lugg. Ben had been living in UK since he was 13 and was aware that his return to NZ cricket offered little chance of advancing to International levels. He nearly got thrown out of the game for misbehaviour but now he has redeemed himself. I expect the commentators, journalists and umpires around the world will be arguing about some of the decisions made in the last couple of overs for years to come...counting to six should not be so difficult, it is the number after five! Take heart NZ. Morally you won the World Cup.

George played last Thursday in a representative game. Bowled 9 consecutive overs in 100 degree heat. Had 2 catches dropped and one good catch disallowed.
Not a happy bunny.

I hope he didn't smash a window with a chair in the changing room. The selectors would have seen a chap who had 3 catches, who bowled consistently in the heat and hung in there without complaining. The numbers don't tell all the story, do they.
I hope his spinning fingers are getting better. Do you have a special 'rapid heal' solution for things like that? I use a red tincture of herbal stuff that was developed by the Monks who invented kung fu. They wanted their guys to heal quickly. It is used all over S E Asia and you will find it in any Chinese grocery, little bottle in a red and white box, called TIEH TA YAO GIN.

Thanks questa! We'll check it out when next in London.
The disallowed catch was odd. Batsman chopped it onto his boot and it squirted to slip who caught it. Didn't walk and umpire couldn't see what happened which was fair enough. Game was tied on 213 each!

Aah so, it was ever thus! After being played for centuries you would think that the Game had used up all its tricks and subtleties...but no, that is another little story to do the rounds of change rooms and pubs until one day a grandfather will say to his offspring "Of course it hit my boot but I wasn't going to walk, was I?"

Well done Oz. We were totally outplayed.
Good to see an off spinner getting wickets. Our one seems to be shot.

Thank you, Mick. Oz needed that win to gain credibility, didn't they. A lot of the chatter here focussed on the umpiring. I listened to the BBC commentary on digital radio while watching the Oz TV coverage of the ball by ball play. Both parties were puzzled by some of the decisions the umpires made. What do you think

What worries me is that George has developed a little soft spot for the Aussies!
Says their preparation was much better.

I think that soft spot will disappear when he is holding his bat and facing one of our quicks.
