I played with a guy called Bell. He was called Dinger...
One of the Waugh's had a good nickname?

Steve Waugh was Tugga and his twin, slightly younger, was first called 'Junior'. After being overlooked for selection he was called 'Afghanistan' ...the 'forgotten war' and this stuck.

So, tell me what do you think of Petersens dismissal. He seems bitter and twisted and I am not the only one to agree that he has done everything asked of him, only to come up blank. If I was Kevin slogging my guts out and getting that INCREDIBLE amount of runs, only to be told "sorry schmuck, you did it all for nothing because we LIED"!!!!!! I would be furious and rightly so!

I have not been following the story, can you summarise it for me please. When he was here last he got many peoples' backs up and in spite of his brilliance with the bat, didn't make many friends here. Shane Warne, who is an old mate, defended KP and took some of the media heat off him.

Questa, I have only been reading the newspaper headlines (in UK) and listening to the comments on SKY NEWS. I heard Andy Murray say if someone has the talent to win, their personality should not be reason enough to stop them playing and bringing victory to their team. It seems England think they can win without him. Can you imagine the flack if they don't....and worse if they get a good hiding?? Not fair on England to have to take such a risk. I would love to know Mick's take on this saga.

I'm getting pretty tired of it all but nobody comes out of it with any credit. The ECB have been very poor in their handling of this but it is obvious that KP's ego is the size of Mount Everest.
I am not a KP fan as you know and the bald facts are that he is nearly 35 and the county runs he got for which it was hinted he would be considered again, were only against a University side and this 355* which is an enormous score but against the weakest county side in Div 2 who haven't won a game in 2 years plus he was dropped 4 times.
If he had stayed with Surrey and carried on for the season he would have gone up mightily in many people's estimation instead of constantly whining about how he has been treated.
In his last 10 Test innings he is only averaging 37 anyway. His time has been and gone.

In his last 10 Test innings he is only averaging 37 anyway. His time has been and gone. Oh, this says it all. He can't expect to stay on a Test team if this is his level of skill. Being dropped only shows the bowling team's ineptness not the batsman's skill. The batsman had made the mistake that allowed the bowling team to almost take the wicket. I have long thought that when working out averages and totals the batsman should only be allotted those runs that are gained before the dropped catch. Let him keep batting and scoring so the game progresses, but in the scorebook the pre-drop score is written against his name, and the rest are "ghost runs" like byes which may decide the match outcome.

On the reverse side can I count games where I got out to wonder catches that had no right to be taken?

The fact stands...you hit the ball to a position where it was catchable, even if the fielder walked on water to get it.
Ain't cricket a wonderful game!

Thanks Mick for your input & you too Questa. Just by your terminology I am lost.... I thought I would tell you what our local newspaper says today: "Shunned England batsman Kevin Pietersen has a calf injury and will not fly to India to play in the Indian Premier League as he had planned. Having been told by new England cricket director Andrew Strauss on Monday that he would not be selected for this summer's Test Matches, Pietersen was due to take up his contract with Sunrises Hyderabad. But he sustained an injury playing for Surrey against Leicestershire in the county championship, a match in which he completed a career-best 355 not out on Tuesday, and will be out of action for two weeks. Pietersen was incensed by Strauss's decision after having been told in March by incoming England and Wales Cricket Board chairperson Colin Graves that if he scored runs in county cricket he would be considered for a recall to the Test Team. SA-born Pietersen has scored 8181 test runs for England including 23 centuries, and has said he is desperate to return to the national side." In another story printed on the same page "Ian Bell thinks there is still a way back for Pietersen" There is still a way back into the England side for exiled star batsman Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell said yesterday. Newly appointed England director of cricket Andrew Strauss told Pietersen, in international exile since the team's return from their 5-0 Ashes thrashing last year, that he would not be considered for selection for the upcoming home series with New Zealand and Australia. Bell, who said Pietersen was 'probably the best player I've played with', told a news conference in London. "This has been dragging on for a long time. It's a pretty packed middle order right now. But, if he(Pietersen) keeps scoring runs, maybe there's a position in time" Strauss, Pietersen's successor as England Captain, said a "massive trust issue" prevented the S>A> born batsman's return, even though he is England's all-time leading run-scorer across all formats. That appeared to contradict comments from Colin Graves, the incoming England and Wales Cricket Board Chairman, that a return was possible if Pietersen scored enough runs in county cricket. Bell said "If that did happen and then you get 350, of course you can be a little aggrieved, can't you?" I agree with you Mick, Kevin does seem to have a huge aggresive ego. I remember seeing him on the Graham Norton Show and not mincing his words about "I would rather be on safari watching wild animals than sitting on this couch" Graham came back with a splendid retort " Well, don't let us keep you!"

What do the England team players think? Would his inclusion in the team for the Ashes cause a rift, distract the players? We hear from former players and commentators, officials and managers, but what about those who are trying to do a day's work with bat and ball. Can his batting prowess overcome his arrogance as far as his fellow players are concerned?

If it was the bit about what should be counted as a batsman's score, don't worry, just me sounding off about an unfair rule. Unless you really want an explanation, I won't bore you with it.

What a game Saturday!
The opening bowlers were being crashed to all parts and a score of 350 in 50 overs was not unlikely. George went for 20 in his first 2 overs but then worked the batsman out that he wasn't comfortable playing off his legs so adjusted his line and went for just 28 off his remaining 8 overs. Bowling at the other end was a guy who although only medium pace can swing an orange and between him and George they squeezed the other side tightly and slowed them right down. Even so they still got 276-9 (with 34 extras)!. We then got them for the loss of just 1 wicket with a club record partnership of 242 and with 9 overs to spare. And it was all proper batting, indeed we didn't even score 1 six. A real treat. 2 league games, 2 league wins.

OUCH! I bet those extras hurt! What were they? Does the w/keeper watch out for batsmen's weaknesses and advise the bowler? Smart of George to pick up on the weakness so early...I hope he passed on his observation to the other bowlers and not keep them to himself as Boycott used to do re batting.
Swing an orange...I like that. I remember DK Lillee bowling a large red apple to some hapless batsman at the end of a game in Perth. Sent down a "hit me" delivery and willow met apple which burst into applesauce all over the place.

What a bowler. I remember when I was working in the City standing in a pub and watching Lillee and Thompson totally clean us up.
It was the second team keeper and there were 6 leg byes that you can't do much about but also 4 wides on 4 occasions. Really need to tighten up on that. Our overseas player is an Aussie from Perth. Lovely guy too.
England v NZ starts tomorrow. I have a feeling England might surprise a few after the KP debacle.
Just bear with us Tod. It will make sense. Eventually........

Wow! What a fantastic match that was - I couldn't take my eyes off it. George was lucky enough to be there yesterday and see the whole thing live.
George's team won the league match on Saturday taking 3-21 in his 8 overs (reduced by rain to a 40 over match) which keeps them top of the league. On Sunday they won the next round of the 20/20 cup, George 1-19 in 4 but that puts them up against Radlett in the next round who are one of the strongest club sides in the UK.
His younger brother Joe, 13, can now play legitimately for the third XI and took 1-14 in 6.

I have been busy and missed the end of the match...last bit I heard was England were just starting 2nd innings and making a comeback....
George is a pretty consistent bowler for the league, isn't he? and now a brother to push each other along.
