I love my steam trains. Here's some pictures from our visit last year (and it's a free museum too). This one actually in steam on the day - Huge Chinese loco - Mallard - holder of the world steam loco record - Duchess of Hamilton just rebuilt in her 1930's livery - General view round the turntable -

Excellent. I love transportation museums whether they are devoted to trains, autos, motorcycles or aircraft. I could probably spend a week there drinking it all in. Those steam engines with the streamlined coachwork look incongruous to me, I don't expect to see steam locomotives and aerodynamic bodywork together.
One of my best days ever was visiting both the Ferrari museum in Maranello and the Ducati museum in Bologna. I'm afraid the photos I took would bore all but the staunchest petrol heads to tears though ;D

Remember it was the 1930's, the Art Deco era, when streamlining was the thing. Makes them look very elegant to me.
I've seen Mallard steaming many times.
Indeed- I only put a tiny number of the pictures I took on here....

Those are really beautiful. I really must get around to going to the railway museum in Mulhouse one of these days. (As for the Schlumpf automotive museum in the same city, I think I will give it a miss.)

They look great when they are all spiffed up. When I was a child, there were still some steam locomotives on a lot of the lines (such as the boat train from Le Havre to Paris) and things were not nearly as shiny. Whenever the train went into a tunnel everybody would rush to close the windows as fast as possible, and then of course those grand old train stations of Europe were all black as coal. I never would have guessed that they are actually cream coloured if they had not been painstakingly renovated, sandblasted and steamed after the end of steam engines.

Oh ~~ I somehow completely missed this thread!
These are great pictures, Mick. When they fire those old engines up, do they actually take them anyplace? Are all of the locomotives in the museum actually operable?
The next-to-the-last picture and the last one look like working areas. Is the museum part of a real, once-working train yard?

Most of them are static now Bixa as they need boiler certificates to operate. The odd one does go out and be used on chartered trips. The one at the top just goes about half a mile up the line then returns. Yes, this once was a working yard and is right next to York main station. More details here - www.nrm.org.uk/

In our developed world of idleness, you would think that more of these locomotives would venture out to animate our leisure activities. What are they waiting for?

Health and safety I'm afraid Kerouac. You can barely move here for regulations to save us from ourselves.
Plus of course the lines are no longer designed for steam trains, few water stops for example, and they get in the way of all the serious modern trains.
Sigh.....................

Hookup Females Uses Cost-free Affairs? An Incredible Horizontal Reward!
Totally free hookup girls Hookup apps and sites on the internet is the solution if you're sick and tired of likely to bars and organizations merely to be prevented, as well as even worse, laughed at. I am aware what it's like because I've been there. I used to be individual and eager back in the day -- I required a new spouse -- however i kept on trying because I had not any other selection. If you're one particular person who would like to hookup with sexy girls without planning to those places where the ladies are by itself, than the write-up might just alter your life. It can make clear why courting online is the greatest substitute if you're a guy that is shy to approach a wonderful woman inside a nightclub or club.

So Marilyn ,
What are your views on steam engines? Better than diesel or electric?
