Last night we went out to dinner with some friends at the Palestinian Club. We had kubbe, hummus and a sort of sampler thing with stuffed veggies, kebabs, etc. There were two things I had never tried before and I was wondering if anyone knew what they are. With the kubbe there was this spicy yellow sauce. It looked very similar to hummus, but it wasn't. The other was ground beef with spices and parseley in an oval shape that looked like it had been grilled. Any ideas?

Wouldn't the ground beef be kofta?

How did the yellow sauce taste? Was it yogurt-based?

It didn't seem to be, at least yoghurt wasn't a main ingredient. It was quite spicy, so I am guessing it had some sort of chiles in it. It might have had garlic too.

It probably had tahini, I am thinking tahini, green chili, garlic, oil, lemon, something like that. We will definitely go back, so I will have to remember to ask what it is called. In the meantime I might try to whip something up in the hand blender with those ingredients, it was very good.

Dont you say meatballs for kofte in English?? Not if they have exotic spices. People also prefer to say shish kebab instead of "grilled meat on a skewer."

My guess for the other thing is definitely tahini. The farther from home that any of these dishes get, the less likely it is for a surprise item to be presented, and tahini is one of the well known things that have been "approved by foreign taste buds."

I'd also go with kofta. Keema seems to be loose, not shaped and grilled. I just image googled it, looks good too! As for the yellow sauce, no idea.
